Build a writing prompt generator

Here’s a simple idea for a writing prompt generator. It could randomly combine elements from different categories to spark creativity. We can break it into a few different categories like genre, setting, character, and situation. Here’s a basic structure:

Categories:

  1. Genre: Fantasy, Science Fiction, Romance, Mystery, Thriller, Horror, Historical, Slice of Life, Adventure, etc.

  2. Setting: Forest, Space Station, Medieval Castle, Suburban Town, Futuristic City, Desert, Underwater, Abandoned Building, etc.

  3. Character: Wizard, Detective, Alien, Artist, Soldier, Journalist, Scientist, Teenager, Vampire, etc.

  4. Situation/Plot: A secret is uncovered, A person wakes up with no memory, A dangerous game begins, A world-ending event is approaching, A loved one is missing, etc.

Example Generated Prompts:

  1. Fantasy: A young wizard is tasked with saving a kingdom, but the only way to do so involves making a dangerous pact with an ancient dragon in a mysterious forest.

  2. Science Fiction: In a space station orbiting a dying star, a crew member discovers an alien artifact that could either save or destroy humanity.

  3. Romance: Two rival chefs in a small town must team up to save their restaurant, but sparks fly as they work together.

  4. Mystery: A detective must solve the case of a missing person, but the deeper they dig, the more they suspect the person’s disappearance was self-inflicted.

  5. Thriller: A group of strangers wakes up on an island, only to realize they are part of a twisted experiment where survival is the ultimate game.

You could build out a list of 50-100 entries per category and have a random generator that picks one from each category to create a writing prompt.

Does that sound like the kind of generator you were envisioning? Or are you thinking of something different?
