This omission stems from several factors, including the dominance of Eurocentric frameworks in published anthropological research, limited access to indigenous-authored sources, and a historical tendency to marginalize non-Western epistemologies.
Indigenous knowledge systems are holistic, deeply interconnected with the environment, and often transmitted orally rather than through written texts. AI models, trained primarily on digitized content, may struggle to fully capture these perspectives. Additionally, the categorization of indigenous knowledge within Western academic disciplines sometimes distorts its meanings, reducing complex worldviews to simplistic ethnographic descriptions.
To address these omissions, AI developers and anthropologists must actively incorporate indigenous-authored texts, oral histories, and community-led research into AI training datasets. Ethical AI practices should also prioritize indigenous voices in discussions about cultural heritage, sovereignty, and intellectual property rights.
A more inclusive approach to AI-driven anthropology would involve collaborations with indigenous scholars, recognition of diverse epistemologies, and sensitivity to the ethical implications of AI-generated discourse. By doing so, we can work toward a more accurate and respectful representation of indigenous knowledge within digital and academic spaces.
