In AI design, centering user dignity means prioritizing respect, fairness, and emotional well-being throughout the entire design process. From the initial concept to deployment and continuous monitoring, designers must be intentional about creating AI systems that empower, protect, and support users. Here’s how AI designers can do this across all design stages:

1. Empathy in Ideation and Conceptualization

The foundation of designing AI that centers user dignity starts in the ideation stage. Designers must prioritize understanding users’ needs, values, and experiences by involving them in the development process. Using empathy-driven research methods like interviews, surveys, and observational studies, designers gain deep insights into user perspectives, concerns, and aspirations. This helps ensure the technology serves and uplifts users instead of exploiting or dehumanizing them.
