How to create a wooden storage locker for a garage or mudroom

Creating a wooden storage locker for a garage or mudroom is a rewarding project that can help you keep your space organized. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you build your own storage locker:

Materials Required:

  • Wooden boards (plywood or MDF works well for the sides, back, and shelves)
  • Wooden framing lumber (for the structural framework)
  • Screws and nails
  • Wood glue
  • Hinges (if you plan to have doors)
  • Drawer pulls or handles
  • Sandpaper (to smooth the surface)
  • Wood finish or paint (optional for protection and aesthetics)
  • Measuring tape
  • Circular saw or table saw
  • Drill and screwdriver

Step 1: Design and Plan

First, decide on the size and number of sections you want for your locker. Commonly, storage lockers have multiple compartments to store items like shoes, jackets, hats, and tools. You’ll need to measure your space to determine the appropriate dimensions of your storage locker.

Step 2: Cutting the Wood

Using your measurements, mark and cut your wood pieces. You’ll need:

  • Two side panels (height of your locker and depth of your design)
  • Top and bottom panels (length and width of the locker)
  • Back panel (size of the locker, ensuring it fits snugly against the back)
  • Shelves or dividers (if you’re adding internal shelving)
  • Door panels (if you’re adding doors, measure according to the sections you want to cover)

Use a circular saw or table saw to make precise cuts. Sand the edges of the cuts for smoothness.

Step 3: Assemble the Frame

Start by assembling the basic frame. Attach the two side panels to the top and bottom panels using wood screws. Drill pilot holes for the screws to avoid splitting the wood. Apply wood glue to the edges of the panels before screwing them together for extra stability.

Once the frame is assembled, add the back panel by screwing it into place. If the locker is larger, you might want to add some internal supports or dividers.

Step 4: Add Shelves or Dividers (Optional)

If you want your locker to have shelves or compartments, install them by measuring and cutting shelves to fit. Mark the positions of the shelves inside the frame and secure them with screws or shelf brackets.

For compartments, use vertical dividers cut to size and install them using screws.

Step 5: Attach Doors (If Using)

If you’re adding doors to your locker, measure the space between the sides of the frame and cut the door panels accordingly. Attach the hinges to the side of the frame, then to the door panels. Test the door to ensure it opens and closes smoothly. Install handles or pulls on the doors.

Step 6: Sand and Finish

Once the locker frame and doors are fully assembled, sand the entire surface to remove any rough spots. Start with coarse sandpaper and finish with a finer grit for a smooth finish.

If you prefer a natural wood look, apply a wood stain or varnish to protect the wood. Alternatively, you can paint the locker to match the decor of your garage or mudroom.

Step 7: Mount or Position the Locker

After the finish has dried, move the locker into place. If you’re mounting the locker to the wall for added stability, use a stud finder to locate the wall studs and securely attach the locker using screws.

Additional Tips:

  • Customization: You can add hooks for hanging coats or small baskets for additional storage inside the locker.
  • Ventilation: If you plan to store items like shoes or wet clothing, add ventilation holes to prevent moisture buildup.
  • Heavy-duty hardware: If you plan to store heavy tools or equipment, use stronger hinges and reinforcement on the frame to ensure stability.

This simple wooden storage locker will help you organize your garage or mudroom and keep your belongings easily accessible while adding a functional, rustic charm to the space.
