How to build a wooden spice rack with a lazy Susan feature

Building a wooden spice rack with a lazy Susan feature is a practical and fun woodworking project. Not only does it offer a neat and organized way to store your spices, but the rotating lazy Susan mechanism also makes it easy to access all your bottles. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you create your own.

Materials Needed:

  • Wood for the spice rack: Choose hardwood like oak, maple, or pine for durability and a good finish.
  • Lazy Susan hardware kit: These kits are available in most hardware stores and come with a rotating mechanism.
  • Screws: For attaching the hardware and assembling the pieces.
  • Wood glue: For strong bonding.
  • Wood finish or paint: To protect and beautify the wood.
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Saw (circular or table saw for precise cuts)
  • Drill with bits (to make screw holes and holes for the Lazy Susan hardware)
  • Sander or sandpaper (for smooth edges)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Plan and Measure

Start by planning the design of your spice rack. Determine the size you want based on the space available in your kitchen or pantry. A standard diameter for the rack’s top is usually around 10-12 inches, but you can adjust this depending on your needs.

  • Dimensions for a small rack: If you plan to make a two-tier rack, you might go with a base of 10-12 inches in diameter for the bottom tier, and a smaller top tier that’s about 8-10 inches in diameter.
  • Height of the rack: Typically, the height is around 10-12 inches for a two-tier rack, but adjust depending on the number of spices you plan to store.

Once you have the dimensions, sketch your design and plan how the pieces will fit together. Remember that your spice rack needs two circular pieces for the base and the top, along with vertical supports to hold the spice jars.

Step 2: Cut the Wood Pieces

Using a circular saw or a table saw, cut your wood into the required pieces.

  1. Top and Bottom Circles: You will need two round pieces of wood for the top and bottom of your spice rack. If you don’t have a router or jigsaw, you can use a compass or a circle cutting jig to create perfect circles.

  2. Vertical Supports: Cut four vertical supports, each around 3-4 inches high, depending on your design. These will hold the jars and create a frame between the two circular layers.

  3. Additional Shelves: If you’re building a two-tier rack, cut additional smaller pieces of wood for the shelves where the spice jars will sit.

Step 3: Sand the Edges

Once all the pieces are cut, use sandpaper or a sander to smooth out any rough edges. Sand the tops and bottoms of the circular pieces and the vertical supports to ensure a clean, polished finish.

Step 4: Assemble the Frame

Start assembling the base of the rack by attaching the vertical supports to the bottom circular piece. You can attach the supports using wood glue and screws for added strength.

  • Apply wood glue to the edges of each vertical support, then place them evenly around the perimeter of the bottom circle.
  • Use clamps to hold the supports in place while the glue dries. After drying, reinforce the joints with screws to ensure the frame is sturdy.

Step 5: Install the Lazy Susan Mechanism

Now that the frame is ready, it’s time to install the Lazy Susan mechanism.

  • Follow the instructions included in your Lazy Susan kit. Typically, one part of the mechanism will attach to the bottom of the base, and the other part will attach to the top circle.
  • Position the Lazy Susan hardware in the center of the bottom circle, then drill pilot holes for the screws.
  • Attach the mechanism securely, ensuring it spins smoothly before proceeding.

Step 6: Add the Top Tier

Once the Lazy Susan mechanism is installed, attach the second tier (the top circle) to the Lazy Susan bearing. This allows the rack to rotate while keeping the top shelf in place.

If you’re building a two-tier rack, make sure that the spacing between the two circles is enough to hold your spice jars without them tipping over. For this, you may want to add additional vertical supports or spacer blocks.

Step 7: Add Spice Jar Shelves (Optional)

If you’re creating additional shelves for your spice jars, use small wood pieces to form the shelves, then attach them between the vertical supports. You can use glue and screws to secure these shelves, ensuring they’re spaced evenly to fit standard spice jars.

Step 8: Finish the Rack

Once the rack is fully assembled, give it a final sanding to smooth the surface and remove any glue residue. After sanding, apply your desired finish to the wood. You can use a wood stain for a natural look or paint it to match your kitchen decor. Don’t forget to apply a clear topcoat for protection.

Step 9: Final Assembly

After the finish has dried, carefully place your spice jars on the shelves. Now, your spice rack is ready to use! The Lazy Susan mechanism should make it easy to spin and access all your spices with ease.

Tips and Customizations

  • Customize the design: You can personalize the spice rack by adding decorative elements, such as a carved design or trim along the edges of the circles.
  • Size adjustments: Make the rack as large or as small as you need. Larger racks can hold more spices, while smaller racks are perfect for limited spaces.
  • Material choices: Experiment with different wood types for a more personalized look. For a rustic aesthetic, use reclaimed wood or distressed wood.
  • Labels: Add labels to your spice jars to make it even easier to find the right spice while cooking.

This simple yet functional project will not only help keep your kitchen organized but will also give you a sense of accomplishment from crafting something useful yourself.
