Creating a wooden trundle bed with a storage drawer is a rewarding woodworking project that combines functionality with craftsmanship. This bed design is perfect for small spaces, as it provides an additional sleeping area and storage space while maintaining a tidy and organized bedroom. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you build your own trundle bed with a storage drawer:
Materials Needed:
- Wood (Pine or hardwood such as oak, maple, or birch for durability)
- Plywood (For the bed’s platform and trundle frame)
- Screws and wood glue
- Drawer slides (Heavy-duty, side-mount)
- Wooden dowels or nails (For assembling parts)
- Wood finish (Stain or paint of choice)
- Sandpaper (For smoothing surfaces)
- Measuring tape and square
- Circular saw or miter saw
- Drill (With bits for pilot holes)
- Clamps (For holding pieces together while assembling)
Step 1: Design and Measurements
The first step is to determine the size of the trundle bed and the storage drawer. A standard trundle bed usually fits a twin-size mattress, which is 75 inches long and 38 inches wide. Make sure to adjust the measurements to fit the space available in your room.
Trundle Bed Dimensions:
- Length: 75 inches
- Width: 38 inches
- Height: 8 to 10 inches (for the trundle to fit under the main bed)
Storage Drawer Dimensions:
- Length: 75 inches (same as the bed length)
- Width: 24 inches (or depending on the amount of storage space you want)
- Height: 10 to 12 inches
Step 2: Cutting the Wood
Using your saw, cut the following pieces:
Bed Frame:
- 2 pieces of 75 inches long for the side rails.
- 2 pieces of 38 inches long for the head and foot rails.
- 1 piece for the center support (about 75 inches long).
Trundle Frame:
- 2 pieces of 75 inches long for the sides.
- 2 pieces of 38 inches long for the front and back.
Drawer Components:
- 2 pieces of 75 inches long for the sides.
- 2 pieces of 24 inches long for the front and back.
- 1 piece of plywood cut to fit the bottom of the drawer.
Step 3: Assembling the Bed Frame
- Start with the main bed frame. Attach the side rails to the head and foot rails using wood screws or wooden dowels. Be sure to drill pilot holes to avoid splitting the wood.
- Add the center support beam for added durability, especially if the bed is going to support a heavier mattress.
- Reinforce the frame by adding corner brackets or additional support at the joints.
- Install the slats across the bed frame to support the mattress. You can space the slats about 3 to 4 inches apart, depending on the thickness of the mattress.
Step 4: Building the Trundle
- Assemble the trundle frame. Attach the side pieces to the front and back rails, ensuring they are square and aligned properly.
- Install the slats inside the trundle frame to support the mattress. Space the slats similarly to the main bed frame.
- Add caster wheels to the bottom of the trundle for easy movement in and out from under the bed.
- Test the fit under the bed frame. The trundle should slide smoothly in and out. If necessary, adjust the height of the trundle frame by sanding or adding additional spacer pieces.
Step 5: Building the Storage Drawer
- Assemble the drawer frame by attaching the side, front, and back pieces together with wood glue and screws.
- Attach the drawer bottom by securing the plywood panel into place. Ensure it’s well centered and flush with the edges.
- Install the drawer slides on both sides of the drawer and the inside of the bed frame. Make sure the slides are level and aligned for smooth opening and closing.
- Test the drawer by sliding it in and out to ensure it operates smoothly.
Step 6: Finishing Touches
- Sand all surfaces to remove any rough edges and prepare the wood for finishing. Start with a coarser grit and finish with a fine-grit sandpaper for a smooth finish.
- Stain or paint the bed. Choose a wood finish that complements the room decor and provides a protective layer for durability.
- Install the mattress in the trundle bed and make sure everything is secure.
Step 7: Adding the Mattress
Now that the bed frame and trundle are complete, add the mattress on the main bed frame and the trundle. Ensure that the mattress fits snugly in the trundle, leaving enough room for it to slide smoothly.
Additional Tips:
- Drawer Organization: To maximize storage, consider adding dividers or baskets inside the drawer.
- Mattress Compatibility: Ensure the thickness of the trundle mattress is suitable for easy movement under the main bed. Typically, trundle beds use thinner mattresses, ranging from 6 to 8 inches in thickness.
- Finish Protection: Apply a protective polyurethane coat over your stain or paint to extend the life of the bed, especially if it will be subjected to heavy use.
By following these steps, you’ll have a sturdy, functional, and stylish wooden trundle bed with a storage drawer. It’s a great way to make the most out of limited space while creating a beautiful piece of furniture.
