How to Make a Wooden Dog Crate That Doubles as an End Table

Creating a wooden dog crate that doubles as an end table is a great project for anyone who wants to combine style with function. This project not only provides a comfortable and secure space for your dog but also offers a beautiful piece of furniture that fits seamlessly into your living room decor. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to make a wooden dog crate that doubles as an end table.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Wood planks (pine, oak, or plywood – depending on your preference)
  • Wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Hinges (for the door)
  • Wood stain or paint (to match your furniture)
  • Metal mesh or wooden slats (for the sides)
  • Circular saw or table saw
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Screwdriver
  • Measuring tape
  • Wood filler
  • Sandpaper
  • Safety goggles and hearing protection

Step 1: Plan the Design

Before you start cutting and assembling, make sure you have a clear idea of the size and style of the dog crate. The dimensions should be large enough for your dog to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. The end table feature will likely have a flat top, so plan for how the top will be supported and how the crate will be accessed (usually with a hinged door).

A typical size for a small to medium dog might be around 24″ wide, 24″ deep, and 24″ high, but adjust based on your dog’s size.

Step 2: Cutting the Wood

Using your circular saw or table saw, cut your wood planks to the following dimensions (again, adjust to your measurements):

  • Top: 1 piece (the top of the end table and crate, typically 24″ x 24″)
  • Sides: 2 pieces (each side will be around 24″ x 24″)
  • Front: 1 piece (front of the crate, also 24″ x 24″)
  • Back: 1 piece (back of the crate, again 24″ x 24″)
  • Interior divider (optional): Cut a piece to divide the crate for smaller dogs, or leave it open for larger dogs.

Step 3: Prepare the Door Frame

The door is the most important moving part of your dog crate. Depending on your preference, you can either make a single door or two smaller doors that open separately. For simplicity, we’ll cover a single door design:

  1. Measure the width and height of the front opening (keeping a small gap around the edges to allow easy movement of the door).
  2. Cut 4 pieces of wood for the door frame: 2 vertical pieces and 2 horizontal pieces.
  3. Attach these pieces using wood glue and screws to create a frame. You can reinforce the joints with corner brackets for extra durability.

Step 4: Install the Metal Mesh or Wooden Slats

For ventilation and visibility, you’ll want to install either metal mesh or wooden slats on the sides and possibly the back of the crate. This allows your dog to see out and provides airflow.

  • Mesh: Cut the mesh to fit each side and back panel. Use a staple gun or small nails to attach it to the wood frame.
  • Slats: If you prefer a more traditional look, cut wooden slats and space them about 1″ apart for airflow. Attach them vertically or horizontally to the frame.

Step 5: Assemble the Base and Sides

Now it’s time to start assembling the crate structure.

  1. Attach the sides to the bottom piece using wood screws and wood glue. Make sure everything is square by checking with a carpenter’s square.
  2. Attach the back piece to the sides.
  3. Attach the front piece, leaving room for the door. Secure it with screws.

Step 6: Attach the Door

To attach the door:

  1. Use hinges to attach the door frame to one side of the front panel.
  2. Ensure the door swings open and closed freely. You may need to adjust the hinges slightly if there’s too much friction.
  3. Install a small latch or lock on the opposite side to keep the door securely closed.

Step 7: Sand and Finish the Wood

To give your crate a polished, finished look, sand all the edges to remove any rough spots. Once sanded, apply wood filler to any gaps or screw holes. After the filler dries, sand it smooth.

You can stain or paint the crate to match your home’s decor. A clear wood stain will highlight the natural grain of the wood, while a darker stain or paint can give the crate a more modern, sleek look. Make sure to apply several coats of finish, allowing each coat to dry thoroughly.

Step 8: Add the End Table Top

Once the crate structure is complete and the finish has dried, it’s time to add the top. Depending on your design, the top may be a solid piece of wood or one with a decorative border to match your end table style.

  1. Attach the top to the crate structure using screws from the inside of the crate to avoid visible screw holes on the top surface.
  2. If you want the top to be removable for cleaning, you can attach it with screws but leave it loose enough to be lifted off.

Step 9: Final Touches

Once your crate is fully assembled and finished, you can add cushioning for your dog inside. A comfortable bed or blanket will make the space cozy for your furry friend.

You may also consider adding non-slip pads or felt underneath the legs of the crate to protect your floors and keep it stable.

Step 10: Place Your New End Table in Your Home

Now that you have your wooden dog crate and end table combination ready, find the perfect spot for it in your home. Place it near a sofa or chair for easy access to your dog, and enjoy the functionality and beauty of your new creation!

This woodworking project is a great way to show your love for your pet while adding a stylish piece of furniture to your home. Not only does it provide your dog with a comfortable and secure space, but it also serves as a functional end table that doesn’t take up extra space.
