How to create a wooden kitchen storage rack with spice jars

To create a wooden kitchen storage rack for spice jars, follow these steps:

Materials:

  • Wooden board (plywood or solid wood, 1/2″ thickness)
  • Wood screws or nails
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper (medium and fine grit)
  • Paint or wood stain (optional)
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Saw (if the wood needs cutting to size)
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Screwdriver
  • Spice jars (for sizing)
  • Level

Instructions:

  1. Measure and Plan:

    • Decide where you want the spice rack in your kitchen (e.g., under a cabinet, on the wall, or in a cupboard).
    • Measure the size of your spice jars. Typically, spice jars are 2-3 inches in diameter, but make sure to measure the exact size.
    • Determine the height and width of the rack based on the number of jars you want to store.
  2. Cut the Wood:

    • Cut the wooden board into your desired size. A simple rack design could include one long shelf with rows of spaces for the spice jars, but you could also opt for multiple smaller shelves stacked vertically.
    • If you are making a shelf with individual compartments, cut vertical pieces of wood to act as dividers for each spice jar. Space them about 3 inches apart (or based on your jar size).
  3. Assemble the Frame:

    • If you’re making a simple horizontal rack, attach the side panels to the main shelf with wood screws or nails.
    • For a more structured rack, attach the dividers between the side pieces to create individual compartments. Use wood glue to secure the pieces before adding screws or nails.
  4. Attach the Rack to the Wall (or Cabinet):

    • If the rack is to be wall-mounted, use a drill to create holes for screws in the top of the rack, then screw it into the wall studs.
    • Ensure the rack is level by using a level before drilling the holes.
    • Alternatively, if it’s going under a cabinet, you can attach it with screws to the bottom of the cabinet.
  5. Finish the Rack:

    • Sand the rack with medium-grit sandpaper first to smooth rough edges, followed by fine-grit sandpaper to create a smooth surface.
    • If you want a polished look, apply a wood stain or paint. Let it dry completely.
  6. Arrange Spice Jars:

    • Once the rack is installed and finished, place your spice jars into the compartments. If you have multiple rows, make sure the jars are easy to access.

This simple design keeps your spices organized and accessible while also adding a rustic touch to your kitchen.
