How to build a wooden barstool with a swivel seat

Building a wooden barstool with a swivel seat is a rewarding project that combines woodworking skills with the functionality of creating a practical and stylish piece of furniture. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you build your own swivel barstool.

Materials and Tools Needed:

  • Wood: Hardwood (oak, maple, or walnut) is a great choice for durability and finish.
  • Swivel mechanism (purchased or custom-made)
  • Screws: Wood screws (1 1/2 inch and 2 1/2 inch sizes)
  • Wood glue
  • Wood finish or paint
  • Sandpaper (various grits)
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Circular saw or miter saw
  • Measuring tape
  • Wood clamps
  • Screwdriver
  • Wood filler
  • Stool seat cushion (optional)

Step 1: Plan Your Barstool Design

Before starting, decide on the height of the stool. The average bar height is around 30 inches, and the seat should be between 24 to 30 inches from the ground, depending on personal preference and the height of your bar.

Sketch the design and dimensions, ensuring the seat is sturdy enough to support the swivel mechanism and user.

Step 2: Cut the Stool Legs

  1. Measure and Cut: Measure four equal lengths for the legs of the stool. For a standard bar height, cut each leg to around 29 inches.
  2. Cutting the Legs: Use a miter saw or circular saw to cut the legs to the desired length. Ensure each leg is of equal length to maintain stability.

Step 3: Cut the Footrest (Optional)

If you want to include a footrest, you can use a 1 1/2” x 1 1/2” piece of wood. Measure it to fit between two opposing legs. Typically, this piece will sit about 8–12 inches above the floor. Cut it and sand the edges smooth.

Step 4: Prepare the Seat Support

  1. Swivel Mechanism Mounting Board: Cut a circular or square piece of wood that will be the support platform for the swivel mechanism. Typically, this piece should be about 12-14 inches in diameter.
  2. Attach the Swivel Mechanism: Secure the swivel mechanism to the underside of this board, following the instructions that come with the swivel kit. The mechanism should be centered and fixed securely with screws.

Step 5: Assemble the Stool Frame

  1. Attach the Legs to the Seat Support: Position the legs at the four corners of the support frame. Use wood glue and screws to attach each leg securely to the frame. To ensure the legs are attached at the correct angle, use a wood clamp to hold them in place before drilling.
  2. Ensure Stability: Make sure that the legs are square to the support board to ensure the stool won’t wobble. It helps to use a square tool to check the alignment.

Step 6: Install the Footrest (Optional)

If you decided to include a footrest:

  1. Position the Footrest: Place the footrest at an appropriate height, usually about 8–12 inches from the floor, and secure it between two opposing legs using screws. You may also want to use wood glue for added strength.
  2. Check for Comfort: Ensure the footrest is positioned for easy use and doesn’t interfere with the stability of the stool.

Step 7: Sand the Stool

  1. Smooth the Edges: Sand all exposed wood surfaces to remove any rough edges. Start with a coarse-grit sandpaper and move to a finer grit (220-grit is ideal) for a smooth finish.
  2. Corners and Legs: Pay attention to the corners and legs, rounding off any sharp edges to prevent injury.

Step 8: Finish the Wood

  1. Stain or Paint: Apply your choice of wood stain, varnish, or paint. If you’re using stain, make sure the wood is clean and dry before application. Follow the product’s instructions for drying times.
  2. Seal the Wood: After the finish is applied and dried, use a clear protective finish, such as polyurethane, to seal the wood and provide durability, especially if the stool will be used frequently.

Step 9: Attach the Swivel Seat

  1. Fix the Seat to the Mechanism: Now that your swivel mechanism is installed on the seat platform, attach the cushioned seat (if used) or a wooden seat to the top of the swivel mechanism. Make sure the screws go into the mechanism securely but not too tight as this may cause the swivel to bind.
  2. Test the Swivel Function: Check the movement of the swivel mechanism to ensure it operates smoothly.

Step 10: Final Touches

  1. Touch Up: Inspect the stool for any rough spots and sand or finish as needed.
  2. Cushioning: If you’re using a padded seat, you can now upholster it with your preferred fabric. Attach the fabric tightly and evenly around the edges of the seat using a staple gun.

Step 11: Enjoy Your New Barstool

Now that the assembly is complete, test the stability of your stool by sitting on it and swiveling. Make sure everything is secure and functional.

This wooden barstool with a swivel seat will not only provide comfort but also add a touch of craftsmanship to your home or bar area. Plus, once you get the hang of this project, you can easily customize it to suit your personal style.
