Step-by-Step Guide to Building a Floating Nightstand

Step 1: Plan and Measure the Nightstand

Before cutting any wood, decide on the dimensions of your floating nightstand. A common size is 18 inches wide, 12 inches deep, and 6 inches high, but you can adjust the measurements to fit your space.

Step 2: Cut the Wood Pieces

Using a circular saw or table saw, cut the following pieces from your plywood or solid wood:

  • Top panel – 18″ x 12″
  • Bottom panel – 18″ x 12″
  • Side panels (2) – 12″ x 6″
  • Back panel – 18″ x 6″
  • Drawer front (optional) – 17 ¾” x 5 ¾”
  • Drawer sides (2) – 10 ¾” x 5 ¾”
  • Drawer bottom – 10 ½” x 17 ¾”

Step 3: Assemble the Nightstand Box

  1. Apply wood glue along the edges of the side panels and attach them to the top panel.
  2. Secure the bottom panel the same way, sandwiching the side panels between the top and bottom.
  3. Attach the back panel to complete the box.
  4. Use 1 ¼-inch wood screws to reinforce the joints, ensuring a strong hold.
  5. Clamp the pieces together and let the glue dry.

Step 4: Build the Drawer (Optional)

If you want a drawer, assemble it separately before attaching it to the nightstand.

  1. Glue and screw the drawer sides to the drawer front and back.
  2. Attach the drawer bottom using wood glue and screws.
  3. Once dry, insert drawer slides to mount it inside the nightstand.

Step 5: Sand and Finish

  1. Sand the entire nightstand with 120-grit sandpaper, then smooth it with 220-grit sandpaper.
  2. Apply wood filler over screw holes or imperfections, then sand again.
  3. Choose a stain, paint, or natural wood finish that matches your bedroom decor.
  4. Apply polyurethane for protection and let it dry.

Step 6: Install the Floating Nightstand

  1. Mark the desired height on the wall.
  2. Use a stud finder to locate studs for secure mounting.
  3. Attach a French cleat or heavy-duty wall brackets to the back of the nightstand.
  4. Secure the matching cleat or brackets to the wall using screws and wall anchors.
  5. Slide the nightstand onto the mounting hardware and ensure it’s level.

Final Thoughts

Building a wooden floating nightstand is a rewarding project that adds both function and style to your bedroom. With a simple, modern design, this DIY furniture piece keeps your essentials within reach while freeing up valuable floor space.
