How to Create a Wooden Record Crate for Vinyl Collectors
Vinyl records have made a strong comeback, and serious collectors know that proper storage is essential for preserving their prized albums. A wooden record crate not only keeps your vinyl safe but also adds a stylish, vintage touch to your collection. This guide will walk you through the process of building a durable and attractive wooden record crate.
Materials and Tools Needed
Materials:
- ¾-inch plywood or solid wood (pine, oak, or birch work well)
- Wood glue
- 1 ¼-inch wood screws
- Sandpaper (120 and 220 grit)
- Wood stain or paint (optional)
- Polyurethane finish (optional)
- Handles (metal or rope, optional)
Tools:
- Circular saw or table saw
- Drill with drill bits
- Clamps
- Measuring tape
- Square
- Pencil
- Screwdriver or impact driver
Step 1: Measure and Cut Your Wood
For a standard vinyl record crate, you’ll need to cut the following pieces from your wood:
- (2) Side panels: 14” x 12”
- (2) End panels: 13 ½” x 12”
- (1) Bottom panel: 13 ½” x 12”
These dimensions will comfortably fit 12-inch records with a little room to flip through them.
Tip: If you prefer a larger crate, adjust the dimensions accordingly, ensuring that the internal width remains at least 13 inches to accommodate the records.
Step 2: Sand the Wood Pieces
Use 120-grit sandpaper to smooth the edges and surfaces of each piece. Follow up with 220-grit sandpaper for a finer finish. This step prevents splinters and ensures that any paint or stain adheres well.
Step 3: Assemble the Crate
- Attach the Sides to the Bottom: Apply wood glue along the bottom edges of the side panels. Position them flush with the bottom panel and clamp them in place. Drill pilot holes and secure them with screws.
- Attach the End Panels: Apply wood glue to the edges of the bottom and side panels, then attach the end panels. Drill pilot holes and drive in screws to hold everything firmly.
- Check for Stability: Make sure all joints are tight and the crate is square before moving on.
Step 4: Add Handles (Optional)
For easy portability, you can add handles:
- Rope Handles: Drill holes on the end panels and thread a thick rope through, tying knots on the inside.
- Cutout Handles: Use a jigsaw to cut oval-shaped handholds in the end panels before assembling.
- Metal Handles: Attach pre-made metal handles with screws.
Step 5: Finish Your Crate
You can leave the crate natural or enhance its look with a finish:
- Staining: Apply a wood stain with a cloth or brush, let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe off the excess. Allow it to dry before applying a protective polyurethane coat.
- Painting: Choose a wood-safe paint and apply two coats, sanding lightly between coats for a smooth finish.
- Distressing: For a rustic look, lightly sand the edges after staining or painting.
Step 6: Let It Dry and Enjoy!
Once your stain or paint is completely dry, place your vinyl records in the crate. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to protect your records from warping.
Final Thoughts
Building a wooden record crate is an easy and rewarding DIY project that gives your vinyl collection a safe and stylish home. Whether you go for a natural wood finish or a painted look, this crate will be both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
