How to Build a Wooden Decorative Tray with Rope Handles

A wooden decorative tray with rope handles is a simple yet elegant DIY project that can add a rustic charm to your home. Whether you use it for serving drinks, displaying décor, or organizing items, this project is perfect for beginners and experienced woodworkers alike. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the step-by-step process of making a wooden tray with rope handles.

Materials and Tools Needed

Materials

  • Wood Board – Pine, oak, or reclaimed wood (1×12 or similar)
  • Rope – Thick jute or sisal for handles
  • Wood Glue – For added strength
  • Screws or Nails – To secure the side pieces (optional)
  • Wood Stain or Paint – To finish the tray
  • Polyurethane or Sealant – To protect the surface
  • Sandpaper – 120-grit and 220-grit
  • Wood Filler (optional) – For any gaps or imperfections

Tools

  • Saw – Circular saw, miter saw, or hand saw
  • Drill – To create holes for the rope handles
  • Clamps – For securing glued parts
  • Measuring Tape – For precise measurements
  • Pencil and Ruler – For marking cuts
  • Paintbrush or Rag – For applying stain or paint

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Measure and Cut the Wood

Start by deciding the size of your tray. A common dimension is 16” x 12” but you can adjust it to your preference. Cut the base from a 1×12 board to the desired length. Then, cut two shorter side pieces for the width and two longer side pieces for the length of the tray.

Recommended Cut List:
  • Base: 16” x 12”
  • Two Side Pieces (Width): 12” x 2”
  • Two Side Pieces (Length): 16” x 2”

Smooth the edges with 120-grit sandpaper to remove splinters.

Step 2: Assemble the Tray

Apply wood glue along the edges of the base and attach the side pieces. Use clamps to hold them together while the glue dries. For extra durability, secure the sides with nails or screws.

If using nails, drive them in at an angle to create a stronger hold. For screws, drill pilot holes first to prevent splitting the wood.

Step 3: Sand and Finish the Wood

Once the glue has dried, sand the entire tray with 220-grit sandpaper for a smooth finish. Pay extra attention to the edges and corners.

Apply your choice of wood stain or paint using a brush or a rag. Let it dry, then seal with polyurethane for a durable finish. If you prefer a distressed look, lightly sand the edges after staining.

Step 4: Drill Holes for Rope Handles

Measure and mark 1.5” from each end of the shorter sides to position your handle holes. Use a drill with a bit slightly larger than the diameter of your rope.

Drill through both sides, ensuring they are aligned properly.

Step 5: Insert the Rope Handles

Cut two equal lengths of rope (around 8”–10” each). Insert the rope through the holes, then tie knots on the inside of the tray to secure them.

If needed, add a drop of glue to the knots for extra hold.

Final Touches

Once the rope handles are secure, give your tray a final wipe-down and check for any rough spots. If everything looks good, your DIY wooden decorative tray with rope handles is complete!

This project is perfect for gifting, home décor, or even selling at craft fairs. Customize it with different stains, stencils, or wood burning for a personal touch.
