How to make a wooden serving tray with rope handles

To make a wooden serving tray with rope handles, follow these steps:

Materials:

  • Wooden boards (such as pine or oak) for the tray base
  • Jute or sisal rope (for handles)
  • Wood screws or nails
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper (fine-grit)
  • Drill with a bit for rope holes
  • Saw (if the wood isn’t pre-cut)
  • Stain or paint (optional for finishing)
  • Wood finish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Cut the Wood

    • Decide the dimensions of your tray. A typical size is around 18” x 12”, but you can adjust based on your preference.
    • Cut your wooden boards to size using a saw. You’ll need a base piece and possibly some strips for the tray sides.
  2. Sand the Wood

    • Use sandpaper to smooth the edges and surface of the wood. Start with a medium-grit sandpaper and finish with fine-grit for a smoother surface.
  3. Assemble the Tray Base

    • If you’re making a tray with sides, attach the side strips around the edges of the base. Use wood glue along the edges, and reinforce with nails or screws. Ensure that everything is square and even.
  4. Drill Holes for the Rope Handles

    • On each side of the tray, drill two holes large enough for the rope to pass through (typically 1/2″ to 1″ diameter). Space the holes evenly, typically 2-3 inches in from the edges.
  5. Attach the Rope Handles

    • Cut two pieces of rope, each long enough to create the desired handle length, plus a little extra to tie the knots.
    • Thread the rope through the holes from the outside of the tray, leaving about 6-8 inches of rope hanging on each side.
    • Tie a knot on each end of the rope on the inside of the tray to secure the handles in place. Make sure the knots are tight and will not slip out of the holes.
  6. Finishing Touches

    • If you want to paint or stain your tray, now is the time. Apply a wood stain or paint, and allow it to dry completely.
    • Once dry, apply a wood finish or sealant to protect the tray from spills and wear.
  7. Test the Handles

    • Gently lift the tray using the rope handles to ensure the knots are secure and the handles are comfortable to hold.

That’s it! You now have a rustic wooden serving tray with stylish rope handles.
