How to create a wooden towel storage rack for a small bathroom

To create a wooden towel storage rack for a small bathroom, you’ll need to focus on maximizing space while also keeping it practical and stylish. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to build one:

Materials:

  • 1x wooden board (1×6 or 1×8 for the main structure)
  • 2x smaller pieces for the shelf brackets (1×4)
  • Wood screws (1 1/2” to 2”)
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint or wood finish (optional)
  • Hanging hardware (picture hangers or brackets)

Tools:

  • Saw (hand saw or power saw)
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Screwdriver
  • Clamps (optional for securing while the glue dries)

Steps:

  1. Measure Your Space: Measure the available wall space in your bathroom to determine how long and high you want your towel rack. A typical size could be around 18–24 inches wide and 36 inches tall.

  2. Cut the Wood: Cut your main wooden board (the one that will hold the towels) to the desired length. For the support brackets, cut two smaller pieces from the 1×4 wood to around 6-8 inches long.

  3. Prepare the Brackets: On each of the two smaller pieces (the brackets), measure and mark a spot about 1/2 inch from the edge to create a lip for the main board to sit on. This will help give the rack more stability.

  4. Assemble the Frame: Attach the smaller brackets to the back of the main board using wood screws and wood glue. These will act as the horizontal supports for the towel rack. Ensure the brackets are level and evenly spaced before drilling the screws in.

  5. Add the Towel Bars: If you want horizontal bars to hold the towels, you can cut two or three dowel rods or wooden slats to fit across the width of the rack. Space them out evenly and drill holes in the side of the main board. Insert the dowel rods and secure them with glue.

  6. Sand and Finish: Once the frame is assembled, sand all edges and surfaces smooth. You can then apply a wood finish, paint, or leave it natural, depending on your style preference.

  7. Mounting the Rack: Once the rack is finished, measure where you want to mount it on the wall. Use a level to make sure it’s straight. Attach the hanging hardware (picture hangers, or brackets) to the back of the rack. Install corresponding wall anchors or screws to hold the rack securely in place.

  8. Hang Towels: After the rack is mounted, hang your towels on the bars or simply fold them neatly on the shelf.

Tips:

  • If space is tight, you can create a vertical rack or use multiple narrow shelves for towels.
  • Add a small shelf above the towel bars to store toiletries or other items.
  • Consider sealing the wood with a waterproof finish since bathrooms are high-humidity areas.

This simple yet functional project will help keep your bathroom organized and stylish while making the most of your space!
