How to create a wooden rolling laundry cart with canvas bags

Creating a wooden rolling laundry cart with canvas bags is a practical and stylish project that can add both function and beauty to your laundry room. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to build one from scratch.

Materials and Tools Needed:

Materials:

  • 1x Pine or Oak wood board (1” thick, 12” wide, 4’ long) for the frame
  • 2x Pine or Oak wood boards (1” thick, 10” wide, 2’ long) for the sides
  • 2x Pine or Oak wood boards (1” thick, 12” wide, 2’ long) for the base
  • 2 Canvas bags (about 15” x 15” x 12” each)
  • 4 Swivel caster wheels (2 with brakes)
  • Wood screws (1 ½” long)
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper (120-grit)
  • Wood stain or paint (optional)
  • Fabric for the bag’s straps and lining (optional)
  • Canvas or fabric for the bags
  • Staple gun

Tools:

  • Saw (circular saw or miter saw)
  • Drill with drill bits (1/8” and 1/4” sizes)
  • Screwdriver
  • Wood clamps
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Staple gun
  • Paintbrush (if staining or painting)

Step 1: Cut the Wood Pieces

First, measure and cut your wood according to the dimensions provided. You will need:

  • 1 frame piece (12” x 48”)
  • 2 side pieces (10” x 24”)
  • 2 base pieces (12” x 24”)

Make sure all cuts are precise and even to ensure a square, stable frame.

Step 2: Assemble the Cart Frame

Start by assembling the frame of the cart. Lay the 12” x 48” frame piece flat and position the two 10” x 24” side pieces along each side of it. Apply wood glue along the edges where the side pieces meet the frame, then use wood screws to secure them in place.

To further strengthen the frame, you can add corner braces or wooden dowels for additional support.

Step 3: Attach the Base Pieces

Next, attach the 12” x 24” base pieces. Lay these two pieces across the bottom of the frame, ensuring that they’re centered. Apply wood glue along the edges of the base pieces and secure them with screws. Use clamps to hold everything in place while the glue dries.

Step 4: Sand the Frame

Once the frame is assembled, sand it smooth using a 120-grit sandpaper. This will remove any rough edges and give the cart a polished look. You may also want to stain or paint the wood at this stage for added color and protection. Let the finish dry before moving on.

Step 5: Prepare the Canvas Bags

Now, it’s time to prepare the canvas bags. If you purchased pre-made bags, skip to the next step. If you’re making your own, cut two rectangular pieces of canvas fabric (about 15” x 15”) and sew them together to form a bag. Add fabric lining to the inside if desired.

You’ll also need to sew two straps for each bag to attach to the cart frame. The straps should be long enough to securely hang over the cart sides. Measure and sew accordingly.

Step 6: Attach the Bags

Next, position the bags inside the cart frame. Use your staple gun to attach the top edge of each bag to the side of the cart. Staple the fabric securely, leaving a bit of slack so the bags have room to expand. Ensure that the bags are centered and aligned symmetrically on both sides of the cart.

Step 7: Attach the Casters

To make the cart mobile, attach the four swivel caster wheels to the bottom of the cart. Two of the wheels should have brakes, so position those at the front of the cart. Drill holes at each corner of the frame’s base, then screw in the caster wheels. Tighten them to ensure they are secure.

Step 8: Final Touches

Once the casters are attached, give the cart a final inspection. Make sure all screws are tightened, the canvas bags are securely fastened, and the wheels move smoothly. If you chose to stain or paint the wood, you may want to add a clear protective coat to preserve the finish.

Step 9: Use and Enjoy!

Now your wooden rolling laundry cart with canvas bags is ready for use! Load it up with laundry, roll it to the washing machine or closet, and enjoy the convenience it brings to your laundry routine.

This project is customizable in terms of the wood finish, fabric, and size, so feel free to tweak the design to fit your specific needs and aesthetic preferences.
