How to Build a Wooden Mailbox with a Locking Compartment

Building a wooden mailbox with a locking compartment is a great way to enhance the security of your mail while adding a custom aesthetic to your property. This guide will walk you through the process of constructing a durable and secure wooden mailbox, complete with a locked section for mail collection.

Materials Needed

Before starting, gather the following materials:

  • Wood (Cedar, Redwood, or Pressure-treated Pine for durability)
  • Plywood (½-inch or ¾-inch for the interior compartment)
  • Wood Screws (1 ½-inch and 2 ½-inch)
  • Exterior Wood Glue
  • Hinges (For the door of the locking compartment)
  • Lock (Cam lock or padlock hasp)
  • Weatherproof Wood Finish (Paint, stain, or sealant)
  • Measuring Tape
  • Circular Saw or Table Saw
  • Drill and Drill Bits
  • Screwdriver
  • Clamps
  • Sandpaper or Electric Sander

Step 1: Design Your Mailbox

Before cutting any wood, sketch out your mailbox design. A standard mailbox is about 18 inches long, 8 inches wide, and 10 inches tall, but you can adjust dimensions to suit your needs.
Your mailbox will have two compartments:

  1. Upper Mail Slot: Where the mail is inserted.
  2. Lower Locking Compartment: Where the mail is collected and secured.

Plan for a sloped or gabled roof to help shed water and protect the interior from rain.

Step 2: Cut the Wood Pieces

Using a circular saw or table saw, cut the following pieces:

  • Two Side Panels (10″ x 18″)
  • Front Panel (8″ x 10″, with a mail slot cut out)
  • Back Panel (8″ x 18″)
  • Top Panel (Roof) (9″ x 19″)
  • Bottom Panel (8″ x 18″)
  • Locking Compartment Door (7 ¾” x 9 ¾”)

Ensure all edges are smooth by sanding them down.

Step 3: Assemble the Mailbox Frame

  1. Attach the front panel to the side panels using wood glue and 1 ½-inch screws.
  2. Attach the back panel in the same manner.
  3. Secure the bottom panel by screwing it into place.
  4. For the top panel (roof), allow it to overhang slightly to prevent water from seeping in. Secure it using screws and wood glue.

At this point, the basic frame of your mailbox is complete.

Step 4: Create the Locking Compartment

  1. Divide the mailbox into two sections using a horizontal divider made of plywood.
  2. Attach the divider about 6 inches above the bottom panel to create space for the locking compartment.
  3. Cut a small mail slot (around 1″ x 6″) on the front panel just above the divider.
  4. Secure the locking compartment door with hinges at the bottom.
  5. Attach the lock of your choice. A cam lock works well for a flush-mounted design, or a padlock hasp for added security.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

  • Sand the entire mailbox to smooth out rough edges.
  • Apply a weatherproof finish (paint, stain, or wood sealant) to protect it from moisture and sun damage.
  • Install the mailbox on a wooden post or wall mount using screws or brackets.

Step 6: Install Your Mailbox

  1. If mounting to a post, dig a hole at least 24 inches deep, set a 4×4 wooden post, and secure it with concrete.
  2. Once the post is stable, attach the mailbox using screws.

Final Thoughts

A wooden mailbox with a locking compartment provides security and durability while enhancing your home’s curb appeal. With proper materials and a solid design, you can create a mailbox that is both functional and stylish.
