How to Create a Wooden Beach Caddy with Compartments

A wooden beach caddy is a practical and stylish way to transport your essentials to the shore. Whether you’re carrying towels, sunscreen, snacks, or drinks, a well-designed beach caddy with compartments helps keep everything organized. This guide will walk you through building a durable, functional, and visually appealing wooden beach caddy.

Materials and Tools Required

Materials:

  • Plywood or solid wood (½-inch thick for durability)
  • Wood glue
  • Wood screws (1 ¼ inch)
  • Wood filler (optional)
  • Sandpaper (120- and 220-grit)
  • Paint or wood stain
  • Waterproof sealant
  • Rope or wooden dowel (for the handle)

Tools:

  • Tape measure
  • Pencil and ruler
  • Circular saw or handsaw
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Clamps
  • Wood file or chisel
  • Screwdriver
  • Paintbrushes

Step 1: Plan and Design Your Caddy

Determine the size of your beach caddy based on what you plan to carry. A common size is around 16 inches long, 12 inches wide, and 10 inches high. You’ll also need to decide how many compartments you want—typically, three to five sections work well for storing different beach items.

Step 2: Cut the Wood Pieces

Using a circular saw or handsaw, cut the following pieces:

  • Base: 16” x 12”
  • Two Side Panels: 10” x 12”
  • Two End Panels: 10” x 16”
  • Dividers: Cut as needed based on compartments

Ensure your cuts are straight and smooth out rough edges with sandpaper.

Step 3: Assemble the Caddy Frame

  1. Attach the Side Panels: Apply wood glue along the edges of the base and attach the side panels. Use clamps to hold them in place.
  2. Secure the End Panels: Align the end panels with the base and sides. Drill pilot holes and insert screws to strengthen the joints.
  3. Add the Dividers: Mark where you want the compartments, then glue and screw in the dividers to create separate sections.

Let the structure dry for a few hours before proceeding.

Step 4: Create the Handle

Choose a rope handle or wooden dowel handle:

  • For a rope handle, drill holes on each end panel and insert a sturdy rope, tying knots on the inside.
  • For a wooden dowel handle, drill holes slightly larger than the dowel diameter, then insert the dowel and secure it with glue or screws.

Step 5: Sand and Finish

  • Sand all surfaces using 120-grit sandpaper and then 220-grit for a smooth finish.
  • Fill any gaps with wood filler if needed.
  • Apply your preferred stain or paint. If painting, use outdoor-rated paint for durability.
  • Apply a waterproof sealant to protect against moisture and sand.

Step 6: Final Assembly and Touch-Ups

  • Once the finish is dry, inspect your caddy for any sharp edges or rough spots.
  • Attach any additional features, such as hooks or bottle openers.
  • Test the handle strength and make sure all compartments are secure.

Enjoy Your Beach Caddy!

Now you have a sturdy, stylish, and functional wooden beach caddy perfect for carrying everything you need to the shore. Whether it’s snacks, drinks, towels, or toys, this caddy makes your beach trips more organized and enjoyable.
