How to Make a Wooden Music Stand with an Adjustable Height

Creating a wooden music stand with an adjustable height is a rewarding woodworking project that combines functionality with craftsmanship. This guide will walk you through the materials, tools, and step-by-step instructions needed to craft a durable and elegant music stand.

Materials and Tools Needed

Materials:

  • Hardwood (oak, maple, cherry, or walnut) for durability
  • 1-inch wooden dowel for the adjustable post
  • ¾-inch plywood for the music holder
  • Metal or wooden tightening knob
  • Wood glue
  • Screws (1 ½-inch and 2-inch)
  • Sandpaper (120 to 220 grit)
  • Wood stain or paint (optional)
  • Clear polyurethane or lacquer for finishing

Tools:

  • Table saw or circular saw
  • Jigsaw
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Chisels
  • Clamps
  • Measuring tape and ruler
  • Wood router (optional)
  • Screwdriver
  • Sanding block or orbital sander

Step 1: Designing the Music Stand

Before you begin cutting the wood, decide on the dimensions of your music stand. A standard music stand consists of three main parts:

  1. Music Holder – The flat surface that holds the sheet music.
  2. Adjustable Post – A mechanism to adjust the height.
  3. Base – A sturdy foundation to support the stand.

A good starting height is 24 to 48 inches, making it versatile for sitting or standing positions.

Step 2: Making the Music Holder

  1. Cut the plywood to 18 x 12 inches for the main panel. This will serve as the music holder.
  2. Shape the edges with a router for a smooth and professional finish.
  3. Add a bottom ledge (approximately 2 inches tall and the same width as the holder) to keep the sheet music from sliding off. Secure it with wood glue and screws.
  4. Drill holes for attachment – Find the center of the bottom back of the music holder and drill a hole where it will connect to the adjustable post.

Step 3: Crafting the Adjustable Post

  1. Cut a 1-inch wooden dowel to 30 inches in length. This will be the adjustable post.
  2. Create the height adjustment mechanism by drilling a series of holes (spaced 1 inch apart) along the top half of the dowel.
  3. Make a sleeve for the dowel – Use a 1 ¼-inch diameter wooden tube or drill a hole into a block of wood that fits snugly around the dowel.
  4. Install a tightening knob – Attach a threaded insert or a wingnut bolt through the sleeve. This will allow the user to lock the stand at the desired height.

Step 4: Constructing the Base

  1. Cut a 12-inch square or circular wooden piece for the base.
  2. Option 1: Tripod Base – If you prefer a collapsible tripod base, use three wooden legs (each 16 inches long) and attach them with hinges or a bracket for folding.
  3. Option 2: Flat Weighted Base – Secure a weighted block at the center of the base for stability.
  4. Attach the dowel post – Drill a hole in the center of the base and glue/screw the dowel securely into place.

Step 5: Assembling the Music Stand

  1. Attach the music holder to the top of the dowel using a bracket or directly screwing it into place.
  2. Test the height adjustment by inserting the dowel into the sleeve and tightening it at different heights.
  3. Ensure stability – Check that the base is firm and the music holder is at a comfortable viewing angle.

Step 6: Sanding and Finishing

  1. Sand all surfaces smoothly with 120-220 grit sandpaper to remove any rough edges.
  2. Apply stain or paint to enhance the wood’s natural beauty.
  3. Seal with polyurethane or lacquer to protect against moisture and wear.
  4. Let dry for 24 hours before use.

Final Thoughts

Building a wooden music stand with adjustable height is an excellent project for woodworkers of all skill levels. By using high-quality wood and ensuring proper stability, you can create a durable and aesthetically pleasing stand that will last for years.
