How to create a wooden cookbook stand with an adjustable tilt

Creating a wooden cookbook stand with an adjustable tilt is a great woodworking project that combines functionality with a touch of craftsmanship. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you build one.

Materials Needed:

  • ¾-inch hardwood (oak, maple, or pine)
  • Hinges (small brass or piano hinge)
  • Dowel rod (⅜-inch or ½-inch diameter)
  • Wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper (120-220 grit)
  • Wood stain or paint (optional)
  • Saw (jigsaw, table saw, or circular saw)
  • Drill and bits
  • Clamps
  • Measuring tape
  • Protractor (for setting angles)

Step 1: Cut the Wood Pieces

You’ll need to cut the following pieces:

  1. Main Panel (Book Support): 10″ x 12″ (adjust dimensions as needed)
  2. Bottom Ledge (Lip): 1 ½” x 12″
  3. Back Support (Tilt Stand): 8″ x 10″
  4. Adjustment Bar: 1″ x 8″ (with multiple holes for tilt adjustment)

Step 2: Assemble the Book Holder

  • Attach the bottom ledge to the main panel using wood glue and screws. This ledge will hold the cookbook in place.
  • Sand the edges smoothly.

Step 3: Create the Adjustable Tilt Mechanism

  • Attach the back support to the main panel using hinges at the bottom.
  • Drill multiple holes along the adjustment bar to allow for different angles.
  • Attach the adjustment bar to the back support, ensuring it can rest in different positions using a dowel or peg.

Step 4: Finishing Touches

  • Sand all surfaces and edges for a smooth finish.
  • Apply wood stain, varnish, or paint for protection and aesthetics.
  • Let everything dry completely before use.

How It Works

  • The back support folds out and is held at various angles by inserting the adjustment bar into different holes.
  • The bottom ledge holds the book in place while reading.

Optional Upgrades

  • Add rubber feet to prevent slipping.
  • Carve a decorative pattern or engrave initials.
  • Use a metal rod instead of a wooden bar for a more durable adjustment system.
