How to make a wooden poolside lounge chair with an adjustable back

Building a wooden poolside lounge chair with an adjustable backrest is a rewarding DIY project. Below is a step-by-step guide.

Materials & Tools

Materials:

  • Wood: Choose weather-resistant wood (cedar, teak, redwood, or pressure-treated lumber).
  • Wood Screws: 2.5″ outdoor-grade screws.
  • Bolts & Nuts: For the adjustable back mechanism.
  • Hinges: For the reclining back support.
  • Wood Glue: Outdoor-rated for extra strength.
  • Sandpaper: 80–220 grit.
  • Outdoor Wood Finish: Stain, sealant, or waterproofing oil.

Tools:

  • Circular Saw or Table Saw
  • Drill & Bits
  • Measuring Tape & Pencil
  • Clamps
  • Sander or Sandpaper
  • Wrench (for bolts)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Cut the Wood Pieces

  • Frame: (2) side rails – 6ft (72″) x 4″ x 2″
  • Cross Supports: (4) crosspieces – 24″ x 4″ x 2″
  • Slats (Seat & Back): (12-15) slats – 24″ x 2.5″ x 1″
  • Legs: (2) front legs – 12″ x 4″ x 2″, (2) back legs – 14″ x 4″ x 2″
  • Backrest Frame: (2) side rails – 28″ x 4″ x 2″, (2) crosspieces – 22″ x 2″ x 2″
  • Adjustable Support Bar: (1) 22″ x 3″ x 1.5″
  • Support Arms: (2) 18″ x 2″ x 1.5″ (for backrest adjustability)

2. Build the Lounge Frame

  1. Assemble the outer frame: Attach the side rails and cross supports using screws and wood glue.
  2. Attach the legs: Secure the front and back legs to the frame with screws.
  3. Attach seat slats: Space them 1 inch apart and screw them into the frame.

3. Build the Adjustable Backrest

  1. Assemble the backrest frame using the side rails and crosspieces.
  2. Attach seat slats to the backrest frame.
  3. Secure hinges at the bottom of the backrest frame and attach them to the lounge frame.

4. Install the Adjustable Support System

  1. Drill multiple holes (about 2 inches apart) along the support arms.
  2. Attach the support arms inside the main frame using bolts, allowing them to pivot.
  3. Attach a wooden bar or metal rod across the arms to hold the backrest in place at different angles.

5. Finishing Touches

  1. Sand all surfaces until smooth.
  2. Apply an outdoor sealant to protect the wood from weather.
  3. Assemble and test the reclining mechanism.

Bonus: Additions

  • Wheels: Attach small wheels to the back legs for easy mobility.
  • Cup Holder or Side Table: Extend the side rails for extra functionality.
  • Cushions: Use weather-resistant cushions for comfort.
