How to build a wooden towel rack with a drying bar

Building a wooden towel rack with a drying bar is a simple yet functional woodworking project. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Materials & Tools:

Materials:

  • 1×4 or 1×6 wooden boards (for side supports and back panel)
  • ¾-inch wooden dowel (for the drying bar)
  • Wood screws or pocket hole screws
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper (120 & 220 grit)
  • Wood stain or paint (optional)
  • Clear sealant (polyurethane or similar)

Tools:

  • Saw (circular, miter, or handsaw)
  • Drill with drill bits and hole saw (or spade bit)
  • Tape measure
  • Clamps
  • Screwdriver or impact driver
  • Sander or sanding block
  • Level
  • Pencil

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Plan & Measure

Decide on the dimensions. A typical towel rack is about:

  • Height: 24–36 inches
  • Width: 18–24 inches
  • Depth: 4–6 inches

Mark your measurements on the wood pieces before cutting.

2. Cut the Wood

  • Cut two side supports (height of the rack).
  • Cut one back panel (width of the rack).
  • Cut one wooden dowel (the drying bar, matching the width of the rack).

3. Drill Holes for the Drying Bar

  • Mark the placement of the drying bar on the inside of both side supports.
  • Use a drill with a spade bit or hole saw (slightly larger than the dowel diameter) to make holes.
  • Ensure the holes are level for even bar placement.

4. Assemble the Frame

  • Attach the back panel to the side supports using wood screws or pocket hole screws.
  • Secure the drying bar by inserting it into the drilled holes with wood glue. Optionally, use screws from the outside of the side supports to reinforce it.

5. Sand & Finish

  • Sand all edges and surfaces smoothly.
  • Stain or paint the wood for a finished look.
  • Apply a sealant for durability, especially in humid bathroom environments.

6. Mounting the Rack

  • Use wall anchors and screws to mount it securely on the wall.
  • If freestanding, add rubber feet for stability.

Customization Ideas

  • Add extra bars or hooks for more drying space.
  • Install a shelf on top for storage.
  • Use reclaimed wood for a rustic look.
