How to create a wooden lantern with glass panels (1)

Creating a wooden lantern with glass panels is a rewarding DIY project that combines woodworking and basic glasswork. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Materials Needed:

  • Wood (pine, oak, or plywood)
  • Glass panels (cut to size)
  • Wood glue
  • Wood screws or nails
  • Hinges (for door, if applicable)
  • Saw (hand saw or power saw)
  • Drill
  • Measuring tape
  • Sandpaper
  • Wood stain or paint (optional)
  • Clamps
  • Small knob or latch (for door)
  • Candle or LED light (for illumination)

Steps to Build the Lantern:

Step 1: Design & Measurements

  • Sketch a simple design with dimensions.
  • A common size is 6”x6”x10” (15x15x25 cm).
  • Ensure the frame will fit the glass panels.

Step 2: Cut the Wooden Frame

  • Cut four wooden pieces for the base and top (square or rectangular).
  • Cut four wooden corner supports (vertical posts) to connect the top and bottom.

Step 3: Create the Frame for Glass Panels

  • Cut grooves (slots) into the vertical posts using a router or saw so the glass can slide in.
  • Alternatively, use thin wooden strips to frame the glass.

Step 4: Assemble the Structure

  • Attach the vertical posts to the base using wood glue and screws.
  • Secure the top piece similarly.

Step 5: Insert the Glass Panels

  • Slide the glass panels into the grooves or secure them with small wooden strips.
  • If making a door, attach one side with small hinges and a latch.

Step 6: Sand & Finish

  • Smooth all edges with sandpaper.
  • Stain or paint the wood as desired.
  • Let it dry completely.

Step 7: Add Lighting

  • Place an LED candle or real candle inside for a warm glow.

Safety Tips:

  • If using a real candle, ensure proper ventilation and fire safety.
  • Use heat-resistant glass if needed.
