How to make a wooden coffee pod storage drawer

Making a wooden coffee pod storage drawer is a great DIY project that adds organization and style to your coffee station. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Materials Needed:

  • Plywood or hardwood (¼” for the base, ½” or ¾” for sides and top)
  • Drawer slides (optional but recommended)
  • Wood glue
  • Brad nails or screws
  • Sandpaper (120–220 grit)
  • Wood stain or paint
  • Clear coat (polyurethane or lacquer)
  • Measuring tape
  • Saw (circular saw, table saw, or jigsaw)
  • Drill
  • Clamps

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Plan Your Dimensions

  • Measure your coffee pods and decide how many you want to store.
  • A standard Keurig K-Cup is about 2 inches in diameter and 1.5 inches tall.
  • A drawer about 12-16 inches wide, 10-14 inches deep, and 3-5 inches high should hold a good number of pods.

2. Cut the Wood Pieces

  • Base: Cut a piece of ¼” plywood to your desired length and width.
  • Sides: Cut two pieces of ½” or ¾” wood for the left and right sides.
  • Front & Back: Cut two more pieces for the front and back panels.
  • Top (optional, for enclosed design): Cut a top piece if you want a closed drawer box.

3. Assemble the Drawer Box

  • Apply wood glue along the edges of the base where the side panels will attach.
  • Secure the side, front, and back panels using brad nails or screws.
  • Use clamps to hold pieces together while the glue dries.

4. Add the Pod Storage Grid (Optional)

  • Cut thin wooden slats (about ⅛” thick and 2″ wide).
  • Create a grid pattern with evenly spaced slats to hold each coffee pod.
  • Glue and nail these dividers inside the drawer.

5. Install Drawer Slides (Optional)

  • If installing under a cabinet or in a coffee station, attach drawer slides on the sides.
  • Otherwise, leave it as a pull-out tray.

6. Sand & Finish

  • Use 120-220 grit sandpaper to smooth all edges.
  • Apply wood stain or paint for your desired look.
  • Finish with a clear coat for protection.

7. Attach a Handle or Knob

  • Drill a small hole in the front panel.
  • Attach a decorative handle or knob for easy access.

Customization Ideas

  • Engrave or stencil a coffee-themed design on the top or front.
  • Use a dark walnut stain for a rustic look or white paint for a modern feel.
  • Add rubber feet to prevent slipping on countertops.
