How to build a wooden candle lantern with a rustic look

Building a wooden candle lantern with a rustic look is a fun and creative project that can add charm to any space. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you create your own rustic wooden candle lantern:

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Wooden planks (for the frame, typically pine, cedar, or reclaimed wood for a rustic feel)
  • Glass jar or votive candle holder (for holding the candle safely)
  • Wooden dowels or metal rods (for the handle if you want one)
  • Wood glue or screws (for assembly)
  • Sandpaper (for smoothing edges and giving it a worn look)
  • Stain or paint (optional, for the rustic finish)
  • Hinges (optional, for the door opening)
  • Tea light candles or other small candles

Tools You’ll Need:

  • Saw (to cut wood)
  • Drill (for holes, if needed)
  • Hammer (for nails, if using nails)
  • Measuring tape and pencil (for marking measurements)
  • Paintbrush (for staining or painting)
  • Screws or nails (for assembly)

Steps to Build the Lantern:

1. Cut the Wood Pieces:

  • Base: Cut a square piece of wood for the base of the lantern. A good size is around 6-8 inches per side.
  • Sides: Cut 4 pieces of wood for the sides of the lantern. These should be rectangular, about 4-6 inches tall.
  • Top Frame: Cut 4 pieces for the top frame of the lantern. The length of these pieces will depend on the size of your base but should be slightly shorter than the side pieces.
  • Door (optional): If you want a door on your lantern to access the candle, cut a fifth side of the lantern that will be hinged. This piece should be the same height as the side pieces but wide enough to cover part of the lantern’s opening.

2. Assemble the Frame:

  • Attach the sides: Start by gluing (and/or nailing) the 4 side pieces to the base. You can use wood glue along the edges for a stronger bond, then reinforce with nails or screws.
  • Top frame: Attach the 4 top pieces to form a square or rectangular frame around the top of the lantern. You can use corner brackets or small screws to make sure it’s secure.
  • If you’re adding a door, attach small hinges to one side of the door piece and the corresponding side of the lantern frame. This will allow the door to open and close.

3. Add the Glass Jar or Candle Holder:

  • Place the glass jar or candle holder inside the lantern. This is where your candle will sit, so make sure it fits snugly but is still easy to remove when needed.
  • If you’re using a tealight or small candle, you can simply place it on the base. For larger candles, ensure the holder is stable and won’t tip over.

4. Finish the Lantern:

  • Sanding: Use sandpaper to smooth rough edges or to give the wood a distressed look. Lightly sand the corners to round them, or you can distress the entire surface for a more rustic feel.
  • Staining or painting: Apply a wood stain or paint for an added rustic touch. A natural wood stain will enhance the grain and give it an aged, worn look. You can also use white or gray paint for a shabby chic style.
  • Optional: To make it even more rustic, you can distress the wood by lightly sanding over the stain once it’s dried to expose some of the raw wood underneath.

5. Attach a Handle (Optional):

  • If you want to make your lantern easy to carry or hang, attach a handle to the top. Use a wooden dowel, metal rod, or twine to create the handle.
  • If using a dowel, drill two holes on opposite sides of the top frame, and glue or screw the dowel in place.
  • For a more authentic rustic feel, you could tie a piece of twine to each side of the top frame to create a handle.

6. Add Your Candle:

  • Place your candle in the jar or holder inside the lantern. You can use a tea light, pillar candle, or even a LED candle if you prefer a safer option.

Final Touches:

  • You can also add some rustic embellishments like twine around the base or top, small dried flowers or branches around the lantern, or even moss inside for a natural touch.
  • To make it extra cozy, place a couple of lanterns on a wooden table, mantle, or as part of a centerpiece!

This lantern will give off a warm, inviting glow and make the perfect rustic decoration for any setting!
