Convert Kindle highlights to CSV

To convert your Kindle highlights to CSV, follow these steps:

Method 1: Using Amazon’s Kindle Cloud Reader or Kindle App

  1. Export Your Highlights:

    • Open your Kindle app or Kindle Cloud Reader.

    • Go to the book you want to export highlights from.

    • On Kindle Cloud Reader (https://read.amazon.com), click on the “Notebook” or “Highlights” tab.

    • You should see a list of your highlights and notes for the selected book.

  2. Copy Your Highlights:

    • Manually copy the highlights and notes from your Kindle account.

    • Some Kindle apps (like on desktop) may allow you to copy the entire list at once.

  3. Paste and Organize:

    • Paste the copied content into a spreadsheet program like Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel.

    • For easy CSV export, structure the highlights as follows:

      • Column 1: Highlight/Note Text

      • Column 2: Page Number or Location

      • Column 3: Book Title

      • Column 4: Date (if available)

  4. Export as CSV:

    • Once your highlights are organized into columns, you can export the file as CSV.

Method 2: Using Kindle Highlights Export Tools

There are third-party services and tools that can help automate the export process:

  1. Export Kindle Highlights via Readwise (www.readwise.io):

    • Readwise integrates with your Kindle account and syncs your highlights.

    • You can export your highlights from Readwise into various formats, including CSV.

    • Sign up for a Readwise account, connect your Kindle, and follow their instructions for exporting highlights to CSV.

  2. Use Clippings.io:

    • Clippings.io is another third-party tool that helps manage your Kindle highlights.

    • After connecting your Kindle account, it allows you to export your notes in multiple formats including CSV.

Method 3: Manual Export from Kindle’s My Clippings.txt (for e-Readers)

  1. Find Your My Clippings.txt File:

    • Connect your Kindle device to your computer.

    • Open the Kindle drive and navigate to the “documents” folder.

    • Find the file called “My Clippings.txt”—this file contains all your highlights and notes.

  2. Extract and Organize:

    • Open the “My Clippings.txt” file in a text editor.

    • Copy and paste the content into a spreadsheet program.

    • You’ll need to clean up the formatting, as the highlights and notes may not be perfectly organized. Split the content into columns manually, similar to the structure described earlier.

  3. Save as CSV:

    • After organizing the data, save it as a CSV file.
