How to Build a Wooden Wall-Mounted Wine Glass Holder

A wooden wall-mounted wine glass holder is a stylish and practical way to store and display your stemware. This project is simple to build and requires basic woodworking skills and tools. Follow this step-by-step guide to create your own functional and decorative wine glass holder.

Materials and Tools Needed

Materials:

  • 1×6-inch wooden board (length depends on your preferred size)
  • 1×4-inch wooden board (for glass slots)
  • Wood screws (1 ¼ inches)
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper (120-220 grit)
  • Stain or paint (optional)
  • Polyurethane (for protection)
  • Mounting brackets or keyhole hangers

Tools:

  • Circular saw or miter saw
  • Drill with drill bits
  • Jigsaw
  • Clamps
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Level

Step 1: Determine the Size

Decide how many glasses you want to store. A typical wine glass has a base of about 3 inches, so allow for at least 4 inches of space per glass. If you want to hold 6 glasses, a board around 24 inches long is a good choice.

Step 2: Cut the Wood

  1. Cut the backboard (1×6) to your desired length. This will mount to the wall and support the glass slots.
  2. Cut the bottom rack (1×4) to the same length as the backboard. This piece will have slots for holding the glasses.

Step 3: Mark and Cut the Glass Slots

  1. Measure and mark equal spacing for the wine glass stems on the 1×4 bottom rack. Ensure each slot is about 4 inches apart.
  2. Use a drill to make a ¾-inch hole at each marked point. This hole will allow the glass stem to slide into place.
  3. Use a jigsaw to cut straight lines from the edge of the board to each hole, creating U-shaped slots.

Step 4: Smooth the Edges

Sand all the pieces thoroughly with 120-220 grit sandpaper to remove rough edges and splinters.

Step 5: Assemble the Holder

  1. Attach the bottom rack (with the slots) to the backboard using wood glue and screws. Ensure it’s flush and level.
  2. Let the glue dry, then reinforce with screws for durability.

Step 6: Stain or Paint

Apply your preferred stain or paint for a finished look. If staining, let it dry completely before sealing with polyurethane for added protection.

Step 7: Mount the Wine Glass Holder

  1. Attach keyhole hangers or L-brackets to the back of the holder.
  2. Mark the wall where you want to mount it and drill pilot holes.
  3. Secure the holder with screws and ensure it’s level.

Step 8: Load Your Glasses and Enjoy!

Once installed, slide your wine glasses into the slots and admire your handcrafted wooden wine glass holder.

This DIY project adds charm and functionality to your home while keeping your glassware neatly organized.
