How to build a wooden entryway bench with storage cubbies

Building a wooden entryway bench with storage cubbies is a great DIY project that combines functionality and style. Whether you’re looking for a practical piece of furniture for your home or a decorative accent for your entryway, this project will give you a custom solution to meet your needs. Follow these step-by-step instructions to create your own entryway bench with storage cubbies.

Materials and Tools

Materials:

  • 1×12 pine boards (or any wood of your choice)
  • 1×3 pine boards for the framing
  • Wood screws (1.5 inches)
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper (120 grit and 220 grit)
  • Wood stain or paint (optional)
  • Wood filler
  • Hinges (for the lid, if you choose a hinged top)
  • Shelf supports (if adding shelves inside cubbies)

Tools:

  • Miter saw (for accurate cutting)
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Level
  • Measuring tape
  • Wood clamps
  • Paintbrush or rag (for finishing)

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Plan the Dimensions

First, determine the size of your entryway bench. Common dimensions are around 36 inches wide, 18 inches tall, and 16 inches deep, but feel free to adjust based on your available space. The bench will be made up of a top, four sides, a bottom, and several cubby dividers.

2. Cut the Wood Pieces

Cut your pine boards to the following dimensions:

  • Top piece: 36” x 16” (or your desired size)
  • Side pieces: 18” x 16” (two pieces)
  • Front and back pieces: 36” x 16” (two pieces)
  • Cubbies dividers: 16” x 12” (3-4 pieces, depending on the number of cubbies you want)

Make sure the cuts are straight and accurate. You can use a miter saw for precision, or a circular saw if that’s more convenient.

3. Assemble the Frame

Start by assembling the basic rectangular frame of the bench. Attach the two side pieces to the front and back pieces using wood glue and screws. Use a level to ensure the pieces are aligned properly, then drive screws in at a 45-degree angle through the sides into the front and back pieces.

4. Attach the Bottom Piece

After the frame is assembled, attach the bottom piece to the bench frame. The bottom piece will provide stability and support for the bench, especially when it’s used to store items. Secure it using wood screws or nails, ensuring it sits flush with the edges of the frame.

5. Add the Cubbies

Measure and mark where you want to place the cubby dividers on the inside of the bench. Typically, cubby dividers are spaced evenly, but you can adjust depending on your storage needs. Use wood glue to attach the dividers inside the frame, ensuring they are straight and perpendicular to the sides. Reinforce them with screws from the side or bottom for added strength.

6. Build the Top Lid (Optional)

If you want a hinged top for additional storage, cut the top lid piece to size and attach it using strong hinges to the back of the bench. Make sure the lid opens easily and is flush with the rest of the bench when closed. You can install a small latch or magnet on the front to keep the lid securely shut.

For a non-hinged top, simply place the top piece on the frame and secure it with screws from the inside of the frame. This will allow the top to be removable, which can be helpful for cleaning or accessing stored items.

7. Sand and Smooth the Edges

Sand the entire bench to smooth out any rough areas. Use 120-grit sandpaper for the initial sanding, and finish with 220-grit sandpaper for a smooth, refined surface. Sand the edges of the cubbies and any other parts that will be visible to ensure a clean, finished look.

8. Apply Wood Filler (If Necessary)

If you have any visible screw holes, wood filler will help to create a smooth surface. Apply wood filler over the holes, let it dry, and then sand it down to match the surrounding wood.

9. Stain or Paint the Bench

Once the bench is sanded and smooth, apply your desired finish. You can stain the wood to enhance its natural grain, or paint it to match your entryway decor. Use a paintbrush or rag to apply the stain or paint evenly across the surface. Allow it to dry completely before applying a second coat if necessary. For added protection, apply a polyurethane topcoat once the finish has dried.

10. Install the Shelf Supports (Optional)

If you want additional shelves inside the cubbies, install shelf supports along the sides of the cubbies. Measure where you want to place the shelves, then attach the supports using screws. Cut the shelves to size and place them on the supports. You can also choose to leave the cubbies open for larger items.

11. Final Assembly

After the finish has dried, place the top on the bench if it’s removable, or check that the lid operates smoothly if it’s hinged. You’re now ready to add cushions, pillows, or decorative touches to your new entryway bench!

Tips and Variations

  • If you prefer, you can make the cubby dividers adjustable by adding removable shelves.
  • For extra durability, you can use hardwood like oak instead of pine.
  • Add hooks or a small rack above the bench for coats and bags.
  • For a more rustic look, consider using reclaimed wood for an aged appearance.

By following these steps, you’ll have a beautiful and functional wooden entryway bench with storage cubbies to help organize your space while adding a touch of elegance to your home.
