How to build a wooden trophy case with glass panels

Building a wooden trophy case with glass panels can be a rewarding and creative woodworking project. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you create a beautiful display case for your trophies.

Materials Needed:

  • 3/4″ hardwood plywood for the frame and back panel
  • 1/4″ thick glass panels (pre-cut to size)
  • Wood glue
  • Wood screws
  • Sandpaper (various grits)
  • Clear wood finish or stain (optional)
  • Wood trim for the edges
  • Cabinet hinges and a latch (for the door)
  • Glass cutter or a pre-cut glass supplier
  • Rubber feet or padding for the bottom of the case
  • Wood filler (for any screw holes)
  • Measuring tape
  • Square and level

Tools Required:

  • Saw (table saw or circular saw)
  • Drill with screwdriver and hole-saw bits
  • Clamp
  • Miter saw (optional for precise angle cuts)
  • Sanding block or orbital sander
  • Paintbrush (if applying finish)
  • Tape measure
  • Screwdriver

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Design the Trophy Case

Begin by designing the dimensions of your wooden trophy case. Consider the number of shelves you want and how many trophies you will display. Common dimensions for a small to medium-sized case are about 24″ x 36″ for the outer frame.

  • Height: 24″–36″
  • Width: 20″–30″
  • Depth: 6″–12″

Ensure you plan for the glass panels on the front and shelves inside, which can be made of glass or wood. You can either design a vertical case with one door or a horizontal design with multiple compartments.

Step 2: Cut the Wooden Panels

Once you have the design, start cutting the plywood. Cut the following pieces from the 3/4″ hardwood plywood:

  • Back panel: One piece matching the dimensions of the width and height.
  • Side panels: Two pieces matching the depth and height.
  • Top and bottom panels: Two pieces matching the width and depth.
  • Shelves: Depending on the number of shelves, cut them to match the width and depth.

If you’re making angled cuts, use the miter saw to get precise angles for any trim or corners.

Step 3: Sand All the Pieces

Before assembly, sand all the pieces of wood to remove any rough edges or splinters. Start with a coarse-grit sandpaper and move to finer grits for a smoother surface. Pay special attention to the edges where the pieces will join, ensuring a tight fit.

Step 4: Assemble the Frame

Start assembling the wooden frame. Begin with the side panels and attach them to the back panel using wood glue and screws. Make sure the edges are flush and square by using a square tool.

  • Attach the bottom and top panels: Once the side panels are securely in place, attach the bottom and top panels using wood glue and screws. Make sure everything is level and square during this step.

Step 5: Install the Shelves

If your design includes shelves, use shelf brackets or create dado joints along the sides of the case to insert the shelves. If you want to make the shelves adjustable, use small metal shelf brackets and place them at different heights inside the case.

  • Optional: For a more sophisticated look, you can install adjustable shelf pins so the shelves can be repositioned as needed.

Step 6: Install the Glass Panels

Now, it’s time to install the glass panels on the front of the case. Measure the width and height of the front opening and cut the glass to size if not pre-cut. Carefully set the glass panels into the frame, and secure them using glazing points or small rubber blocks to keep them in place.

Make sure the glass fits snugly inside the frame, with a small gap to allow for expansion. Be careful when handling the glass to avoid injury.

Step 7: Attach the Door

If your design includes a door to access the inside of the trophy case, cut a frame for the door. The door frame can be constructed in the same way as the rest of the case. Attach glass to the door frame using a similar method.

Install the door with hinges along one side and add a latch or magnetic catch on the opposite side to keep it securely closed.

Step 8: Finish the Wood

Once the case is assembled, apply a wood finish to enhance its appearance. You can choose to stain the wood for a rich color or apply a clear varnish to highlight the natural grain of the wood. Use a brush to apply the finish and allow it to dry fully before proceeding.

Step 9: Add Padding or Rubber Feet

To protect your trophies and the wooden case, place small rubber pads or felt strips along the bottom of the case. This will prevent any potential scratching or damage when placing items inside.

Step 10: Final Assembly and Decoration

Once the finish is dry and the glue has set, carefully assemble the case, ensuring all pieces fit securely together. Add any finishing touches, such as decorative wood trim along the edges or on the door frame to enhance the appearance of the case.

Step 11: Display Your Trophies

Place your trophies inside the case, arranging them in a way that best showcases them. You can add additional features like lighting inside the case to highlight the trophies further.

By following these steps, you’ll have a beautifully crafted wooden trophy case with glass panels that displays your awards in style. This project requires attention to detail and some woodworking experience, but the end result is a stunning, functional piece that showcases your prized trophies.
