How to Build a Wooden Guitar Stand with Padded Supports

A wooden guitar stand is a great way to store and display your instrument while keeping it safe from damage. With padded supports, it provides extra protection for your guitar’s finish. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to build a sturdy and stylish wooden guitar stand.

Materials and Tools Needed

Materials:

  • ¾” plywood or hardwood (such as oak, maple, or birch)
  • Soft foam padding or felt
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper (120 and 220 grit)
  • Wood stain or paint (optional)
  • Clear polyurethane finish
  • Screws (1 ½” wood screws)
  • Rubber feet (optional)

Tools:

  • Jigsaw or bandsaw
  • Drill with drill bits
  • Clamps
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Ruler or T-square
  • Screwdriver
  • Foam brush or cloth for finishing

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Design and Measure

Start by deciding on the design of your stand. A simple A-frame or cradle-style stand works well for both acoustic and electric guitars. If you want a compact design, go for a folding stand with a hinge.

Measurements for a Basic A-frame Stand:

  • Side panels: 18-24 inches tall and 8-10 inches wide (based on guitar size)
  • Base width: 10-12 inches
  • Support arms: 6-8 inches long

Adjust the dimensions based on your guitar type. A larger stand may be needed for a bass or jumbo acoustic guitar.

Step 2: Cut the Wood Pieces

Using a jigsaw or bandsaw, carefully cut out the following pieces:

  • Two identical side panels
  • A crossbar or base piece for stability
  • Two support arms that will hold the guitar

Smooth the edges using 120-grit sandpaper to remove splinters.

Step 3: Assemble the Frame

  1. Attach the crossbar or base to the two side panels using wood glue and screws.
  2. If you want a folding design, install a small hinge at the top to allow movement.
  3. Secure the support arms at an angle to hold the guitar. Use wood glue first, then reinforce with screws.
  4. Let the glued parts dry for at least 2 hours.

Step 4: Add Padding for Protection

To protect your guitar’s finish, attach padding to all contact points:

  1. Cut foam or felt to fit the support arms and inside edges of the stand.
  2. Attach the padding using adhesive spray or double-sided tape.
  3. Ensure the padding is smooth and secure to prevent slipping.

Step 5: Sand and Finish

  1. Sand the entire stand with 220-grit sandpaper for a smooth finish.
  2. Apply wood stain or paint to match your style.
  3. Once the stain dries, apply a clear polyurethane coat to protect the wood.

Step 6: Install Rubber Feet (Optional)

Adding rubber feet to the bottom prevents slipping and protects floors from scratches. Simply screw or glue them onto the base.
