Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Design and Measurements
Before you start cutting, decide on the size of your bench. A standard outdoor bench is around 48” to 60” long, 18” deep, and 18” high. The built-in cooler compartment should be centered and fit snugly. Measure your cooler’s dimensions to ensure a proper fit.
Step 2: Cut the Wood
Use your saw to cut the wood according to these standard measurements:
Frame pieces (2x4s):
- (2) Side rails – 48” long
- (3) Cross supports – 18” long
- (4) Legs – 18” long
- (2) Cooler compartment supports – cut to match the cooler width
Seat slats (1x6s):
- (3) 48” long boards for the seating area
Cooler Lid:
- (1) Board cut to match the opening of the cooler compartment
- (1) Additional piece for a handle if desired
Step 3: Assemble the Bench Frame
- Attach the side rails to the legs using 2.5” deck screws and wood glue, ensuring everything is square.
- Secure the cross supports to reinforce the frame. Position one cross support in the center where the cooler will be placed.
- Attach two additional supports on either side of the cooler section. These will hold the cooler in place.
Step 4: Install the Seat Slats
- Lay the seat slats across the bench frame, leaving about a 1/4” gap between each for water drainage.
- Mark and cut out an opening in the seat for the cooler to fit. Ensure the cut aligns with the inside dimensions of the cooler.
- Secure the seat slats to the frame using screws.
Step 5: Insert the Cooler
- Place the cooler into the opening. It should rest on the support beams.
- If necessary, add additional wooden brackets around the cooler to keep it secure.
Step 6: Attach the Cooler Lid
- Cut a board to match the cooler opening.
- Install hinges on one side to create a flip-up lid.
- If desired, attach a small handle for easy lifting.
Step 7: Sand and Finish
- Sand all edges and surfaces to remove splinters and rough areas.
- Apply an outdoor wood stain or paint to protect the wood from weather elements.
- Seal with a weatherproof sealant to extend the bench’s durability.
Step 8: Final Assembly and Placement
- Let the stain or paint dry completely before placing the bench outdoors.
- Position your new bench in your favorite outdoor spot and enjoy!
This DIY outdoor bench with a built-in cooler is a fantastic addition to any backyard, offering both a stylish seating solution and a practical way to keep your drinks cold.
