How to Create a Wooden Display Case with a Lockable Door

A wooden display case is an excellent way to showcase collectibles, memorabilia, or valuable items while keeping them protected. Adding a lockable door enhances security and provides peace of mind. In this guide, we’ll walk through the process of building a sturdy, attractive wooden display case with a lockable door.

Materials and Tools Needed

Materials:

  • Hardwood or plywood (for frame and shelves)
  • Glass or acrylic sheets (for the front door and side panels)
  • Wood glue
  • Wood screws
  • Hinges (for the door)
  • Locking mechanism (cabinet lock or hasp with a key)
  • Sandpaper (120 and 220 grit)
  • Wood stain or paint
  • Polyurethane finish

Tools:

  • Table saw or circular saw
  • Router (optional, for decorative edges)
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Clamps
  • Measuring tape
  • Wood chisel
  • Screwdriver
  • Paintbrush or rag for finishing

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Plan and Measure

Decide on the size of your display case based on what you’ll be storing inside. A typical case might be 24” wide, 36” high, and 8” deep, but you can adjust as needed. Sketch out your design, including the number of shelves and the placement of the door.

Step 2: Cut the Wood Pieces

Using a table saw, cut the wood for the top, bottom, sides, and back panel of the display case. If you are using glass or acrylic for the side panels, cut the wood frame to fit them.

Typical dimensions:

  • Top & Bottom Panels – 24” x 8”
  • Side Panels – 36” x 8”
  • Back Panel – 24” x 36”

Step 3: Assemble the Frame

  1. Attach the sides to the top and bottom panels using wood glue and screws.
  2. Secure the back panel by nailing or screwing it into place.
  3. If adding shelves, drill pilot holes and insert shelf supports or screw the shelves directly into the side panels.

Use clamps to hold everything in place while the glue dries.

Step 4: Prepare the Lockable Door

  1. Cut the door frame – Measure and cut pieces of wood to form a rectangular door frame that fits the front opening of the display case.
  2. Insert the glass or acrylic – Use a router to create a groove in the door frame, then secure the glass/acrylic with small brackets or silicone sealant.
  3. Attach the hinges – Mount the hinges onto one side of the door and secure them to the case.
  4. Install the lock – Depending on your choice of lock:
    • If using a cabinet lock, drill a hole in the door for the lock cylinder and secure it per the manufacturer’s instructions.
    • If using a hasp, attach it to the frame and door, ensuring proper alignment.

Step 5: Sand and Finish

  • Use 120-grit sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges, followed by 220-grit for a finer finish.
  • Apply a wood stain or paint to match your desired aesthetic.
  • Seal the display case with polyurethane for durability.

Step 6: Install and Secure

  • Mount the display case on the wall using brackets or place it on a sturdy surface.
  • Check the door’s alignment and adjust as needed.
  • Test the lock to ensure it functions properly.

Final Thoughts

A lockable wooden display case is a practical and elegant solution for showcasing and protecting your valuables. With careful planning, precise cuts, and quality materials, you can create a durable and visually appealing case that enhances your space.
