Creating a wooden glasses holder shaped like a nose is a fun and practical woodworking project that requires minimal materials and basic tools. Follow these steps to craft your own stylish and functional wooden nose-shaped glasses holder.
Materials Needed:
- A piece of hardwood (walnut, oak, or maple) – approximately 6″ x 3″ x 2″
- Saw (bandsaw, coping saw, or scroll saw)
- Sandpaper (120, 220, and 400 grit)
- Wood glue
- Wood finish (oil, stain, or varnish)
- Clamps
- Carving knife or rotary tool (optional for detailing)
- Pencil and paper (for sketching)
- Drill and bit set (optional for stand attachment)
Step 1: Design the Nose Shape
- Sketch a rough nose profile on a piece of paper. The design should include a prominent bridge and a base that extends slightly outward to support the glasses.
- Once satisfied with the sketch, transfer the design onto your wood block using a pencil.
Step 2: Cutting the Nose Shape
- Secure the wood block in place with clamps.
- Use a bandsaw or coping saw to cut along the outline of your nose sketch. Make sure to keep the cut smooth and avoid removing too much material at once.
- If using a scroll saw, work slowly and make small relief cuts to refine the shape.
Step 3: Shaping the Nose
- Use a carving knife or rotary tool to round off sharp edges and sculpt the nostrils if desired.
- Gradually refine the shape with coarse sandpaper (120 grit) and progress to finer grits (220 and 400 grit) for a smooth surface.
Step 4: Creating a Base for Stability
- Cut a rectangular or circular piece of wood (about 4″ in diameter or width) to serve as the stand.
- If attaching the nose with a dowel, drill a hole at the base of the nose and the center of the stand, then insert a wooden dowel with wood glue.
- Alternatively, glue the base directly to the bottom of the nose and clamp it securely until dry.
Step 5: Finishing Touches
- Sand the entire holder once more for a polished feel.
- Apply wood stain or finish of your choice to enhance durability and aesthetics.
- Let the finish dry completely before use.
Your wooden glasses holder is now ready to display your eyewear stylishly while keeping them safe from scratches and misplacement.
