How to Make a Wooden Slatted Bath Mat
A wooden slatted bath mat is an elegant, durable, and moisture-resistant alternative to traditional fabric mats. It adds a spa-like feel to your bathroom while keeping your feet elevated and dry. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the step-by-step process of making your own wooden slatted bath mat.
Materials and Tools You’ll Need
Materials:
- Wooden slats (cedar, teak, or bamboo are ideal for water resistance)
- Wood screws or waterproof wood glue
- Wood stain or waterproof sealer
- Rubber feet or non-slip pads
Tools:
- Saw (circular saw or handsaw)
- Drill and drill bits
- Measuring tape
- Sandpaper (120 and 220 grit)
- Paintbrush or rag for staining/sealing
- Clamps (if using glue)
Step 1: Choose the Right Wood
For a bath mat, it’s essential to use water-resistant wood such as teak, cedar, or bamboo. These types of wood naturally resist moisture and mildew, making them perfect for a bathroom environment. Avoid using softwoods like pine, as they absorb water and can rot over time.
Step 2: Cut the Wooden Slats
Determine the size of your bath mat. A standard size is 24 inches long and 18 inches wide, but you can adjust it to fit your space.
- Cut the slats: Each slat should be around 1.5 to 2 inches wide and ½ to ¾ inch thick. You will need 6 to 8 slats depending on your preferred spacing.
- Cut support pieces: You’ll need two or three shorter support pieces (around 1 inch wide and the width of your mat) to hold the slats together.
Step 3: Sand the Wood
- Smooth the edges and surface of each slat with 120-grit sandpaper to remove splinters.
- Use 220-grit sandpaper for a finer, smooth finish.
- Wipe away dust with a damp cloth.
Step 4: Arrange and Space the Slats
Lay out your wooden slats with about ½-inch gaps between them. Place the support pieces horizontally underneath, spacing them evenly to provide stability.
Step 5: Attach the Slats to the Supports
You have two options for securing the slats:
Using Wood Screws:
- Pre-drill holes in the slats and support pieces to prevent wood from splitting.
- Use stainless steel or brass screws (they resist rust) and drive them into each slat.
Using Waterproof Wood Glue:
- Apply a strong waterproof wood glue on the contact points of the support pieces.
- Clamp the slats together and let the glue dry completely before use.
Step 6: Apply a Waterproof Finish
To protect your mat from moisture damage, apply a waterproof sealant or wood stain.
- Use marine-grade polyurethane, teak oil, or tung oil for the best protection.
- Apply multiple coats, letting each coat dry before applying the next.
Step 7: Add Rubber Feet for Grip
To prevent the mat from slipping, attach rubber feet or non-slip pads to the bottom of the support pieces. This will also help with airflow underneath the mat, keeping it dry.
Final Thoughts
Your DIY wooden slatted bath mat is now complete! This project is a simple yet effective way to add a touch of elegance to your bathroom while ensuring durability and functionality. With proper care, your mat will last for years to come.
