Symptoms of impacted wisdom teeth

Impacted wisdom teeth occur when these molars, usually the third set of teeth at the back of the mouth, do not have enough room to fully emerge or align properly. This condition can lead to a range of symptoms, which can vary in severity depending on the degree of impaction. Below are some common signs and symptoms of impacted wisdom teeth:

  1. Pain in the Jaw or Mouth: One of the most noticeable symptoms is pain, which can be either constant or intermittent. The pain may start as a mild discomfort or sharp throbbing near the back of the mouth where the wisdom teeth are located. This pain may worsen when chewing, swallowing, or speaking.

  2. Swelling and Redness: If the wisdom teeth are partially erupted or causing infection, the gums around the area may become swollen and tender. The swelling can extend to the face, especially around the jawline, making it difficult to open your mouth fully.

  3. Bad Breath: As impacted wisdom teeth can sometimes become infected or cause a build-up of food debris and bacteria, bad breath (halitosis) can develop. This odor can be persistent, even with regular brushing.

  4. Gum Inflammation and Infection: When wisdom teeth partially erupt, they can create a flap of gum tissue over the tooth. Food particles and bacteria can get trapped underneath this flap, leading to infection, which may cause redness, tenderness, and even pus discharge.

  5. Difficulty Opening the Mouth: In some cases, an impacted wisdom tooth can result in limited jaw movement, making it painful or difficult to open the mouth wide. This can also be associated with jaw stiffness or discomfort when talking or eating.

  6. Headaches or Ear Pain: Some individuals may experience referred pain, such as frequent headaches or earaches, due to the pressure caused by the impacted tooth. The nerves in the back of the mouth are closely linked to the ear and head area, so pain can radiate.

  7. Tenderness When Touching the Area: The gums around the impacted wisdom tooth may be tender to touch. Applying pressure to the affected area, either by touching the gums with your tongue or when brushing, can intensify the discomfort.

  8. Shifting of Nearby Teeth: As the impacted wisdom teeth push against the adjacent teeth, they may cause shifting or crowding of the other teeth in the mouth. This can result in discomfort, especially if you have braces or recently had orthodontic work done.

  9. Cysts or Fluid-Filled Sac Formation: In more severe cases, a cyst (a fluid-filled sac) may form around the impacted wisdom tooth, leading to further complications. This can result in swelling, bone damage, and even damage to the surrounding teeth or nerves.

  10. Abscess Formation: If an infection from an impacted wisdom tooth spreads, it can lead to the formation of an abscess, which is a pus-filled pocket. This can cause severe pain, redness, swelling, and the potential for fever.

While some people with impacted wisdom teeth experience little to no symptoms, others can face severe complications. It’s important to consult with a dentist if you suspect that your wisdom teeth are impacted, as early detection and treatment can help prevent further issues.
