How to Make a Wooden Bath Mat with Slatted Planks

A wooden bath mat adds a touch of natural elegance to your bathroom while providing a slip-resistant, water-resistant, and durable surface. Unlike fabric mats, a wooden bath mat dries quickly and resists mold and mildew. Making your own slatted wooden bath mat is an easy woodworking project that requires only a few materials and tools. Follow this step-by-step guide to craft a stylish and functional bath mat.

Materials and Tools Needed

Materials

  • 1×4 or 1×2 hardwood planks (such as teak, cedar, or bamboo for water resistance)
  • Wood screws or stainless steel screws
  • Waterproof wood glue (optional for extra stability)
  • Exterior-grade wood finish or teak oil
  • Rubber feet or anti-slip pads

Tools

  • Measuring tape
  • Circular saw or miter saw
  • Sandpaper (120 and 220 grit) or an electric sander
  • Drill and countersink bit
  • Clamps (if using glue)
  • Paintbrush or cloth for applying the finish

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Measure and Cut the Wood

Decide on the dimensions of your bath mat. A standard size is 24 inches long by 18 inches wide, but you can customize it to fit your space.

  1. Cut six to eight slats (depending on your width preference) from 1×4 or 1×2 planks, each 24 inches long.
  2. Cut two support strips at 18 inches long to hold the slats together.

Step 2: Sand the Wood

Since the mat will be used in a wet area, proper sanding is essential.

  1. Smooth all edges and surfaces using 120-grit sandpaper, then finish with 220-grit for a silky surface.
  2. Round off the edges slightly to prevent sharp corners.

Step 3: Arrange the Slats

Lay the slats parallel to each other, spacing them about ½ inch apart to allow water drainage.

  1. Position the support strips underneath, about 2 inches from each end of the slats.
  2. Ensure everything is aligned before securing.

Step 4: Attach the Slats to the Support Strips

There are two secure methods:

Method 1: Using Screws

  1. Drill pilot holes through each slat into the support strip to prevent splitting.
  2. Use a countersink bit so the screws sit flush with the wood.
  3. Secure the slats with stainless steel screws (water-resistant).

Method 2: Using Wood Glue (Optional for Extra Stability)

  1. Apply waterproof wood glue on the support strips before screwing them in place.
  2. Clamp the wood together and let the glue dry before drilling and screwing.

Step 5: Apply a Waterproof Finish

To protect the wood from moisture damage, apply a finish.

  1. Use a brush or cloth to apply teak oil, polyurethane, or spar varnish.
  2. Let it dry, then sand lightly with 220-grit sandpaper before applying a second coat.
  3. Allow at least 24 hours for the finish to fully cure.

Step 6: Attach Rubber Feet or Anti-Slip Pads

To prevent the mat from sliding, attach rubber feet or anti-slip pads to the underside.

  1. Use waterproof adhesive or small screws to attach rubber bumpers at each corner.
  2. Make sure the mat sits firmly on the bathroom floor without wobbling.

Final Thoughts

Your handcrafted slatted wooden bath mat is now ready to use! This elegant DIY bath mat not only enhances your bathroom aesthetics but also provides a natural, spa-like feel. With proper maintenance, such as occasional re-oiling or sealing, your wooden mat will last for years.
