How to create a wooden nightstand with a pull-out tray

Creating a wooden nightstand with a pull-out tray involves several steps. It’s an excellent woodworking project that adds functionality to your bedroom while showcasing your craftsmanship. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you build one from scratch.

Materials Needed:

  • 1x Pine or hardwood board (for the main body and shelves)
  • Plywood (for the pull-out tray)
  • Drawer slides (for the pull-out tray)
  • Wood glue
  • Screws
  • Wood finish or stain (optional)
  • Sandpaper
  • Measuring tape
  • Saw (circular saw or table saw)
  • Drill with bits
  • Screwdriver
  • Wood clamps
  • Wood filler (optional)

Step 1: Plan the Design and Dimensions

Before you begin, plan out your nightstand’s design and determine the dimensions. A typical nightstand might be 24 inches high, 18 inches wide, and 16 inches deep, but you can adjust the size based on your preference.

Decide the number of shelves you want and how deep you’d like the pull-out tray to be. For the tray, 12-14 inches is usually a good size, ensuring that it provides enough space for small items like a phone, remote, or coffee cup.

Step 2: Cut the Wood Pieces

Using your saw, cut the wood for the following parts:

  • Sides: Two pieces for the sides of the nightstand. Each should be the height of the nightstand (e.g., 24 inches).
  • Top and Bottom Panels: One piece for the top and one for the bottom, both should match the width and depth of the nightstand (e.g., 18 x 16 inches).
  • Back Panel: A piece for the back of the nightstand, cut to the width and height you’ve chosen for the design.
  • Shelves: If your nightstand has shelves, cut these to fit between the sides, ensuring they are about the same width as the nightstand (e.g., 16 inches deep and the same width as the sides).
  • Pull-out Tray: Cut the plywood to the desired size for the pull-out tray (e.g., 12-14 inches deep, and the width should match the internal width of the nightstand).

Step 3: Assemble the Main Frame

Now that your pieces are cut, begin assembling the main body of the nightstand:

  1. Attach the Sides: Start by attaching the two side panels to the bottom panel using wood glue and screws. Ensure the sides are flush with the edges of the bottom piece. Use wood clamps to hold the pieces together while the glue sets.
  2. Attach the Back Panel: Attach the back panel to the frame using screws. This will help square up the frame and provide added support.
  3. Attach the Top Panel: Finally, attach the top panel using wood glue and screws, leaving a small gap (about 1/4 inch) along the sides to allow for wood expansion.

Step 4: Install the Shelves (Optional)

If you plan to include shelves, install them next. You can either fix them permanently by attaching them with screws or make them adjustable by installing shelf pegs or brackets.

Step 5: Prepare the Pull-out Tray

Next, you need to create the pull-out tray:

  1. Assemble the Tray: If the tray consists of just a flat plywood piece, you may be finished here. However, if you’re adding sides to the tray, cut and attach the short pieces to the edges of the tray.
  2. Install Drawer Slides: On the sides of the tray, attach one part of the drawer slides, making sure they are evenly spaced and aligned. The second part of the slides will be installed inside the nightstand.
  3. Attach the Slides Inside the Nightstand: Measure and mark where the corresponding parts of the drawer slides will be attached to the inside of the nightstand. Attach them using screws, making sure they are level with the bottom of the nightstand and parallel to the floor.

Step 6: Install the Pull-out Tray

Once the slides are in place, carefully insert the tray into the slides. Test it out to ensure that it slides in and out smoothly. If it sticks or doesn’t slide well, adjust the alignment of the slides.

Step 7: Sand and Finish the Nightstand

Use sandpaper to smooth all edges and surfaces. Start with coarse grit sandpaper (e.g., 80-grit) and move to a finer grit (e.g., 220-grit) for a smoother finish.

You can finish the nightstand by applying wood stain, paint, or a wood finish to match your décor. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the finish you choose, and apply it evenly.

Step 8: Final Touches

After the finish has dried, attach any hardware, such as drawer pulls or knobs, to the pull-out tray. If desired, you can add felt pads or another protective material to the bottom of the tray to keep your furniture safe from scratches.

Step 9: Enjoy Your New Nightstand

Once everything is dry and securely assembled, your wooden nightstand with a pull-out tray is ready to be used. Place it next to your bed and enjoy the added functionality and charm it brings to your bedroom.
