What are dental retainers_

Dental retainers are custom-made devices, typically crafted from plastic or metal, that are used to keep teeth in their new position after orthodontic treatment such as braces or clear aligners. Once teeth have been moved into the correct alignment, retainers help maintain that position while the surrounding gums, bone, and ligaments adjust and stabilize.

There are two main types of retainers:

  1. Removable Retainers

    • Hawley Retainers: Made of a combination of metal wires and acrylic, they are durable and adjustable.

    • Clear Plastic Retainers (Essix): Made from clear plastic material, these are nearly invisible but may not last as long.

  2. Fixed Retainers

    • These consist of a thin wire bonded to the back of the teeth (usually the front lower or upper teeth) and are not removable. They offer continuous support but require special care for cleaning.

Retainers are essential for preventing teeth from shifting back to their original position (a process called “relapse”) and are typically worn full-time at first, then transitioned to nighttime wear as directed by a dentist or orthodontist.
