How to build a wooden frame for a gallery wall

Building a wooden frame for a gallery wall is a great DIY project! Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you create a simple wooden frame for your artwork:

Materials Needed:

  • Wooden boards (for the frame)
  • Measuring tape
  • Saw (circular or miter saw)
  • Wood glue
  • Nails or screws
  • Hammer or drill
  • Corner brackets (optional, for added support)
  • Sandpaper or a sanding block
  • Wood finish or paint (optional)
  • Picture hanging hardware (like D-rings or wire)

Steps:

  1. Decide on the Size of the Frame:

    • Measure the dimensions of the artwork or photos you want to frame. Add a little extra space for the frame width (typically 2-3 inches on each side) and decide on the depth of the frame depending on how you want it to look.
  2. Cut the Wood:

    • Using your saw, cut four pieces of wood:
      • Two pieces for the top and bottom (equal to the width of your artwork + frame width).
      • Two pieces for the sides (equal to the height of your artwork + frame width).

Tip: If you don’t have a miter saw, you can use a circular saw or even ask the hardware store to cut the wood for you.

  3. Assemble the Frame:

    • Arrange the pieces into a rectangular shape. Use wood glue along the edges where the pieces meet.
    • To secure the frame corners, you can use nails or screws. If you want extra stability, you can also use corner brackets at the joints.
  4. Sand the Frame:

    • Sand the edges and surfaces of the frame to smooth out any rough spots. If you’re going for a more polished look, sand until the surface is smooth.
  5. Finish the Wood (Optional):

    • Apply a wood stain, paint, or clear coat to the frame, depending on the look you’re going for. Let it dry fully before moving on.
  6. Add Picture Hanging Hardware:

    • Once the frame is dry and finished, attach the hanging hardware. D-rings or a picture wire on the back will allow you to hang your artwork easily.
    • Position the hardware about 1/3 of the way down from the top of the frame for balance.
  7. Insert Your Artwork:

    • Place your artwork or photo into the frame. You can add a piece of backing board (like foam board or cardboard) to keep the artwork in place, especially if it’s lightweight.
  8. Hang Your Frame:

    • Use nails or picture hooks to hang the frame on the wall. Ensure that the hook placement can support the weight of the frame.

Tips:

  • If you have multiple frames for a gallery wall, try to keep the widths of the frames consistent for a cohesive look.
  • For a rustic or farmhouse style, leave the wood unfinished or lightly distressed.

This project should be simple and straightforward but will add a personal touch to your gallery wall!
