Building a wooden storage bench for your entryway is a great way to add functionality and style to your home. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you create a custom storage bench that fits perfectly in your space.
Materials You’ll Need:
- Wooden boards (preferably plywood or solid hardwood): For the seat, sides, and back panel.
- Screws or wooden dowels: To assemble the pieces.
- Wood glue: To secure the joints.
- Hinges: For the lid (if you’re planning to make the top of the bench open).
- Sandpaper: To smooth out rough edges.
- Wood stain or paint: For finishing and aesthetic appeal.
- Cushion (optional): For added comfort on top.
Tools You’ll Need:
- Tape measure: To measure wood accurately.
- Saw: Circular saw or miter saw for cutting wood to size.
- Drill: For pre-drilling holes and screwing in screws.
- Screwdriver: To insert screws.
- Clamps: To hold pieces in place while assembling.
- Paintbrush: For staining or painting.
- Wood filler: To fill gaps or holes.
Steps:
1. Plan the Dimensions
Before you begin, measure your entryway to determine the ideal size for your storage bench. Typical entryway benches are about 18″ to 20″ high, with a depth of 16″ to 20″ and a width based on available space.
2. Cut the Pieces
Based on your measurements, cut the following pieces:
- Top panel (seat): This will be the largest piece. Cut it to the desired width and depth.
- Side panels: Cut two side panels that match the height and depth you want for the bench.
- Back panel: Cut a piece for the back of the bench, which will add stability and support.
- Bottom panel (optional): If you want a bottom to keep things from falling out, cut a piece for the bottom of the storage space.
3. Assemble the Frame
- Side panels to the bottom: Attach the two side panels to the bottom panel using wood glue and screws. Use clamps to hold the pieces in place while drilling and screwing the joints together.
- Back panel: Attach the back panel to the side panels. If you’re using screws, drill pilot holes to avoid splitting the wood.
4. Attach the Seat
- For a fixed seat: Attach the top panel (seat) directly to the frame using screws. Make sure to countersink the screws for a clean finish.
- For a hinged seat: If you want the seat to open for storage, install the hinges along the back of the seat panel. Screw the other side of the hinge into the back panel of the bench.
5. Add the Lid Support
If the seat opens, you’ll need to install a lid support to keep the top from falling backward when opened. You can buy a metal lid support from a hardware store and attach it to the inside of the back panel and the seat.
6. Sand and Finish the Bench
Sand all surfaces to remove rough edges, ensuring a smooth finish. Start with coarse sandpaper (around 80 grit) and finish with a finer sandpaper (around 220 grit).
Once sanded, apply your choice of wood stain or paint. Be sure to follow the grain of the wood, and apply multiple coats for an even finish. Allow the finish to dry thoroughly between coats.
7. Add Cushion (Optional)
If you’d like a cushioned seat, you can add a foam cushion on top of the bench. Measure the top of the bench, cut the foam to size, and cover it with fabric. Attach the fabric to the underside of the bench using a staple gun or upholstery nails.
8. Final Touches
Once the finish is dry, inspect your storage bench for any rough spots or imperfections, and fix them as needed. You can also add decorative elements like trim along the edges or even drawer pulls for added functionality.
Tips:
- Customize the design: Add small cubbies, baskets, or additional compartments under the seat for more storage options.
- Staining vs. Painting: Choose a wood stain if you want to highlight the natural grain, or paint it for a more vibrant or modern look.
- Safety First: Always use safety equipment like goggles and ear protection when cutting and sanding wood.
Once completed, your entryway bench will serve as a functional piece for storage and a stylish addition to your space.
